Use this checklist to ensure that the rebar (steel reinforcement bar) is in place properly prior to concrete installation.

This reinforcement checklist helps site engineers, supervisors and QA/QC staff confirm that rebar is correctly placed before any concrete is poured. Work through it during the pre-pour inspection so placement, tying and spacing problems are caught while they are still easy to fix.

## What is a reinforcement checklist?

A reinforcement checklist, also called a rebar inspection checklist, is a quality control form used to inspect steel reinforcement before concreting. The inspector checks the installed bars against the approved drawings and specifications, records whether each item is acceptable, and notes anything that must be corrected. Once all items are closed out and signed, the pour can be released. The completed checklist becomes part of the project's quality records.

## When to use it

- Before every pour of footings, slabs, beams, walls and columns
- When the rebar crew reports an area ready for inspection
- Before the engineer's or inspector's formal reinforcement inspection
- After any change to bars, openings or embeds late in the process
- When onboarding a new rebar subcontractor, to set the standard early

## What's included

The download is an Excel spreadsheet (.xlsx) checklist for reinforcement works, set up to be reviewed before concreting. It is aimed at preventing common problems that weaken reinforced concrete, including:

- Incorrect rebar placement
- Rebar not tied properly
- Wrong rebar positioning, spacing or installation

Make sure every item on the checklist is closed before the pour goes ahead.

## How to fill it out

1. Record the project, location, element and grid lines being inspected, plus the drawing and revision numbers.
2. Check bar sizes, grades and quantities against the drawings and bar bending schedule.
3. Measure bar spacing and confirm lap lengths and lap locations.
4. Check concrete cover, and that spacers and chairs are in place and stable.
5. Confirm bars are tied securely and will not move during the pour.
6. Check that bars are clean, and that dowels, starter bars, openings and embeds are in position.
7. Mark each item as acceptable or not, list corrective actions, then re-inspect and sign off.

## Common mistakes to avoid

- Inspecting from the edge of the deck instead of walking the whole area.
- Forgetting cover at the sides and ends of elements, not just the bottom.
- Releasing the pour with items still open "to be fixed during placing".
- Not recording which drawing revision the inspection was based on.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should be checked in a rebar inspection?

Check bar size, grade, number and spacing against the drawings; lap lengths and locations; concrete cover and spacers; tying and stability; cleanliness of the bars; and the position of dowels, openings and embedded items. Record the drawing revision used and any corrections made before the pour.

### How do you check a column before casting?

Confirm the vertical bars, links or ties, spacing and laps match the drawings. Check cover spacers on all faces, that the cage is plumb and secure, and that the formwork is clean, aligned, braced and tight. Make sure starter bars for the next lift are in the right place.

### What tests are done on reinforcement steel?

Rebar is usually accepted on mill test certificates, with samples tested by a laboratory when the specification requires it. Typical tests cover yield and tensile strength, elongation, bend or rebend performance and mass per meter. Your project specification sets which tests and how often.

### What is a QC checklist in construction?

A QC checklist is a list of inspection points for a specific activity. It makes sure the same items are checked every time, records who checked them and when, and shows that the work met the drawings and specifications before it was covered up.
