Tragically, a serious inci\ufffedent can occur before steps are taken to identify and a void or\u00a0eliminate tool-related hazards.<br \/>\nEmployees who use hand and po wer tools and are exposed to the\u00a0hazards of falling, flying, abrasive, and splashing objects, or to\u00a0harmful dusts, fumes, mists, vapors, or gases must be pro vided with\u00a0the appropriate personal protective equipment. All electrical\u00a0connections for these tools must be suitable for the type of tool and\u00a0the working conditions (wet, dusty, flammable vapors). When a\u00a0temporary power source is used for construction a ground-f ault<br \/>\ncircuit interrupter should be used.<\/p>\n<p>Employees should be trained in the proper use of all tools.\u00a0Workers should be able to recognize the hazards associated with the\u00a0different types of tools and the safety precautions necessary \u00a0Five basic safety rules can help pre vent hazards associated with\u00a0the use of hand and power tools:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep all tools in good condition with re gular maintenance.<\/li>\n<li>Use the right tool for the job .<\/li>\n<li>Examine each tool for damage before use and do not use\u00a0damaged tools.<\/li>\n<li>Operate tools according to the manuf acturers\u2019 instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Provide and use properly the right personal protective equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Employees and employers should work together to establish safe working procedures. If a hazardous situation is encountered, it should be brought immediately to the attention of the proper individual for hazard abatement.<br \/>\nThe following sections identify v arious types of hand and po wer tools and their potential hazards.
