Electrical contractors, estimators and project managers can use it for estimates, bids and quotes, and to compare different ways of doing the same job.

What is an electrical estimate?

An electrical estimate is a breakdown of the expected cost of electrical work on a project. It lists the materials, such as wire, conduit, boxes, devices, panels and fixtures, along with the labor hours and equipment needed to install them. Quantities from a takeoff are multiplied by unit costs and labor rates, then overhead, profit and contingency are added to reach the price for a bid or quote.

When to use it

Pricing a residential, commercial or industrial electrical job.

Preparing bids and quotes for general contractors or owners.

Comparing options, such as different materials, equipment or crew types.

Splitting a project into phases, such as rough-in, service and trim-out, and seeing each phase cost.

Building a reusable cost database so each new estimate is faster.

What’s included

The download is a macro-enabled Excel workbook (.xlsm). When you open it you will see four tabs: Instructions, Database, Summary and Stage 1.

A database of around 400 electrical materials with labor coefficients (man-hours needed to install one unit), so labor cost can be calculated automatically.

Room to add your own electrical materials and labor items, with the database able to grow past 1,000,000 rows.

The ability to select multiple database entries at once.

An unlimited number of project phases, each on its own sheet.

A Summary sheet showing results, where the main commands are run.

Automatic basic and detailed reports you can send as quotes.

It is suitable for Excel 2007 and later on Windows and Excel for Mac 2016 and later. Macros must be enabled.

How to fill it out

Open the file, enable macros and read the Instructions tab.

Update material prices and your labor rate in the Database tab.

Add items you use often that are not already in the database.

Do your takeoff from the drawings, then enter quantities for each item in Stage 1.

Add new stages for each further phase of the job.

Review totals on the Summary sheet and add overhead, profit and contingency as needed.

Generate a basic or detailed report and send it to your client.

Tips

On Excel for Mac (version 16.72 and later), if the first report of a session comes out blank while Word is closed, click Report again.

Note what is excluded, such as utility fees, permits or owner-supplied fixtures.

Keep your updated database as a master copy for future jobs.

Related templates and guides

Electrical and Plumbing Cost Estimating Spreadsheet

Construction, Electrical and Plumbing Budget Estimate Template

Quantity Takeoff Template

Electrical Design Quality Checklist

Frequently asked questions

What should an electrical estimate include?

An electrical estimate should include the scope of work, a material list with quantities and prices, labor hours and rates, equipment and rentals, permits and fees if they apply, overhead, profit, contingency and a clear list of exclusions. A summary page with the total price makes it easy for the client to review.

How do you calculate electrical labor cost?

Multiply each item’s quantity by its labor unit, the man-hours needed to install one unit, to get total labor hours. Then multiply the hours by your crew’s hourly labor rate. This template uses built-in labor coefficients to do that calculation for items in its database.

Can I use this template for residential electrical work?

Yes. The template is designed to be useful for any industry and any project, so it works for residential, commercial and other electrical jobs. Add the materials and labor items you use most to the database so it fits the type of work you do.

Does the electrical estimate template work on a Mac?

Yes. It is suitable for Excel for Mac 2016 and later, as well as Excel 2007 and later on Windows. Macros must be enabled. On Mac version 16.72 and later, click Report again if the first report in a session is created as an empty file.

Do I need electrical estimating software?

Not always. Many electrical contractors estimate in spreadsheets because they are flexible and familiar. This template adds features usually found in estimating software, such as a materials database, phases and automatic reports, while keeping everything in Excel.

This Electrical Project Cost Estimate template is an Excel-based template that is useful for any industry and any project.
