It is supported by specific guides on tower cranes, mobile cranes, inspecting and maintaining cranes, and information sheets on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bridge and gantry cranes<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle loading cranes<\/li>\n<li>Vessel-mounted cranes<\/li>\n<li>Crane-lifted work boxes<\/li>\n<li>Using other powered mobile plant as a crane, and<\/li>\n<li>Quick-hitches for earthmoving machinery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>What is a crane?<\/h1>\n<p>A <strong>crane<\/strong> is an item of plant intended for raising or lowering a load and moving it horizontally including the supporting structure of the crane and its foundations.<\/p>\n<p>There are a range of \u2018fixed\u2019 (tower, bridge, gantry, portal boom, vessel-mounted) and \u2018mobile\u2019 (slewing, non-slewing, vehicle loading) cranes.<\/p>\n<p>A range of multi-purpose powered mobile plant including multi-purpose tool carriers and telescopic handlers may be classed as cranes in some operating configurations.<\/p>\n<p>Further crane related definitions are in Appendix A.<\/p>\n<h1>Who should use this Guide?<\/h1>\n<p>You should use this guide if you own, hire, lease, handle, store, transport, maintain or manage the use of a crane in the workplace.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0073e5;\"><span style=\"background-color: #d5d5d5;\">W<\/span><\/span>ho has duties under the law?<\/h2>\n<p>Everyone in the workplace has a work health and safety duty. A range of people have specific responsibilities for cranes including the:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>crane designer, manufacturer, importer and\/or supplier<\/li>\n<li>crane owner and other persons with management or control of the crane or the workplace where a crane will operate<\/li>\n<li>competent person who inspects cranes, and<\/li>\n<li>crane operator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The main duties are set out in Table 1.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This General Guide provides information on how to manage the risks of cranes at a workplace.
