{"id":12408,"date":"2023-01-29T22:46:47","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T06:46:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/intel-cancels-700m-oregon-lab-project\/"},"modified":"2023-01-29T22:46:48","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T06:46:48","slug":"intel-cancels-700m-oregon-lab-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/intel-cancels-700m-oregon-lab-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Intel cancels $700M Oregon lab project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/files\/membership-default-internal\/\" class=\"memberhide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/20220718_175041000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><br\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Dive Brief:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>Tech firm Intel has hit cancel on a $700 million lab project in Hillsboro, Oregon, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/chip-demand-warnings-semiconductor-jobsite-construction\/630486\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>amid a downturn<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> in semiconductor chip demand, Intel spokesperson Addy Burr told Construction Dive in an email.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Santa Clara, California-based company announced a plan to save about $3 billion for 2023 \u2014 and as much as $10 billion by the end of 2025 \u2014 through spending cuts and rightsizing, CEO Pat Gelsinger said during the firm\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/earnings\/call-transcripts\/2022\/10\/27\/intel-intc-q3-2022-earnings-call-transcript\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>third quarter earnings call<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> in October.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cAs we accelerate our strategy and respond to the current demand environment, we are looking to reduce costs and increase efficiencies through multiple initiatives,\u201d said Burr. \u201cThis includes exploring more cost-effective real estate options to continue our data center research and development work in Oregon that is already in progress.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Dive Insight:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Intel planned to use the 200,000-square-foot lab facility to study innovative technologies for data centers, specifically heating, cooling and water usage, according to a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.intel.com\/content\/www\/us\/en\/newsroom\/news\/key-investments-advance-data-center-sustainability.html#gs.o6a08h\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>company press release.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> The firm first released plans to invest more than $700 million for the research and development lab last May.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Intel\u2019s decision to pause construction on its data center research lab follows a series of other hyperscale data center projects scrapped in recent months.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>For example, Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, announced a construction pause in December for its <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/meta-pauses-800m-data-center-project-temple-texas\/639081\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>$800 million data center<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> in Temple, Texas.
