The construction industry had 413,000 job openings in December, according to an analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.org\/News-Media\/News-Releases\/entryid\/19766\/construction-job-openings-surge-by-82000-in-december-says-abc\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>data from Associated Builders and Contractors<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>The BLS data measures the number of jobs for which employers are actively recruiting. December counted 82,000 more open roles than in November, and 54,000 more than December 2021.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cThe 5% of industrywide positions that were unfilled in December is the third highest level on record, and higher than at any point since 2000 \u2014 when the data series began \u2014 until October 2021,\u201d Anirban Basu, ABC chief economist, said in a release.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dive Insight:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The majority of contractors intend to increase staffing levels over the next six months, according to Basu, so \u201clabor shortages will remain a stiff headwind for the industry,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Consumer spending has begun to show signs of weakness, Basu said, but the demand for labor remains high. In the broader economy, job openings remained about 57% above pre-pandemic levels.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cThe implication here is that contractors, who have been facing labor shortages for several years, must now compete with other industries for workers,\u201d Basu said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"inside_story\">\n<div class=\"figure_content\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"inside_story_caption\">\n<p>Courtesy of Associated Builders and Contractors<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>As contractors have increased wages in an attempt to keep up with inflation, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/inflation-is-pushing-wages-higher\/641566\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>it hasn\u2019t always been enough<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>. Indeed, workers want more now from a job in construction, including stability, benefits and a culture that can nurture a long-term career.
