{"id":13750,"date":"2023-03-03T00:38:02","date_gmt":"2023-03-03T08:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/study-progress-still-slow-on-employee-access-to-mental-health\/"},"modified":"2023-03-03T00:38:02","modified_gmt":"2023-03-03T08:38:02","slug":"study-progress-still-slow-on-employee-access-to-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/study-progress-still-slow-on-employee-access-to-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Progress still slow on employee access to mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/files\/membership-default-internal\/\" class=\"memberhide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/20220718_175041000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><br\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><span>Dive Brief:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>Mental health is increasingly a topic of workplace conversation in recent years, and more employees are comfortable talking about their mental health challenges, according to a new Lyra Health survey, but <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lyrahealth.com\/2023-state-of-workforce-mental-health-report\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>many are still not getting help<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> treating conditions such as bipolar disorder, anxiety, chronic depression and attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>Survey data published Tuesday by the mental health benefits vendor showed that 86% faced at least one mental health challenge in 2022, but only one-third said they received support from a therapist, a psychologist or self-care resources. That included 40% of those with severe or chronic depression and 28% of those with conditions such as ADHD, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>All of the 2,501 employee respondents were eligible for health benefits and 29% had access to mental healthcare benefits outside of their medical plan, but this access has been hindered by a shortage of practitioners as well as long wait times for care. Lyra Health also said it found a \u201cdisconnect\u201d between managers and benefits leaders regarding access to dedicated resources for managers on mental health.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><span>Dive Insight:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In 2023, U.S. employers have largely described mental health and emotional well-being as <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wtwco.com\/en-US\/News\/2022\/10\/employers-making-employee-mental-health-and-wellbeing-a-top-health-priority-wtw-survey-finds\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>priorities for their benefits programs<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>. In fact, mental health investment is one of a few reasons why industry analysts who previously spoke to HR expect benefits to be one of the few areas that <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/employee-benefits-compensation-trends-2023\/641462\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>may not see cost cuts<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> during an economic downturn.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>As Lyra Health\u2019s survey shows, however, there may be several obstacles to effective treatment of mental health issues in an employee population. For example, a stigma around the topic persists despite increased societal recognition;\u00a070% of workers in a 2022 Unum survey <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/employers-could-do-more-to-reduce-mental-health-stigma-year-round-workers\/626848\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>said employers could do more<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> to address mental health stigma year-round.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Other reports find that access to mental healthcare is not as widespread as some firms claim, with a 2022 The Harris Poll survey showing that only 23% of workers said their employers <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/lack-of-mental-health-care-access-a-wake-up-call-to-employers\/630892\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>offered no-cost on-site or remote mental health resources<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Last year saw companies including PwC expand the number of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/pwcs-24b-talent-investment-includes-2-shutdowns-per-year-expanded-menta\/623652\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>free annual mental health professional visits<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.
