Home to the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tolive.com\/St-Lawrence-Centre-for-the-Arts\" target=\"_blank\">Bluma Appel and Jane Mallett Theatres<\/a>\u00a0at 27 Front Street, the space has undergone some renovations since its inception. Now,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/stlcnext.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new design competition<\/a>\u00a0would bring a reimagining of the site.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/news\/2023\/02\/five-proposals-shortlisted-st-lawrence-centre-redevelopment.51381\" target=\"_blank\">UrbanToronto previously looked at<\/a>\u00a0how TOLive and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/database\/companies\/createto.7659\" target=\"_blank\">CreateTO<\/a>, the agencies that respectively manage the City\u2019s major civic theatres and real estate portfolio, have partnered to set up an international design competition. The details of the five finalists can be found on the competition\u2019s website until March 3. The design preserves a portion of the existing STLC building in order to help modernize, expand, and adapt it to new technologies. The building would use renewable materials as much as possible, including wood and 85% recycled steel. The Main Theatre\u2019s glass wall could be made transparent for passersby to view performances and rehearsals. The Acoustical Hall would lead to an outdoor terrace that pedestrians can enter. The Main Stage Theatre and Acoustical Hall would have at least 33 wheelchair positions in the Main Stage Theatre to integrate modern advancements in accessibility.
