Home to the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tolive.com\/St-Lawrence-Centre-for-the-Arts\" target=\"_blank\">Bluma Appel and Jane Mallett Theatres<\/a>\u00a0at 27 Front Street, the space has undergone some renovations since its inception. Now,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/stlcnext.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">a new design competition<\/a>\u00a0would bring a reimagining of the site.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/news\/2023\/02\/five-proposals-shortlisted-st-lawrence-centre-redevelopment.51381\" target=\"_blank\">UrbanToronto previously looked at<\/a>\u00a0how TOLive and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/database\/companies\/createto.7659\" target=\"_blank\">CreateTO<\/a>, the agencies that respectively manage the City\u2019s major civic theatres and real estate portfolio, have partnered to set up an international design competition. The details of the five finalists can be found on the competition\u2019s website until March 3. That desire for inclusivity is immediately apparent with the camped foyer and lobby areas. The submission incorporates international standards and guidelines from multiple associations and governing bodies. The timber clad interior borrows from Indigenous themes and materials. The third floor is to lead to a multi-functional bridge connected to Meridian Hall. The bridge continues the themes of openness and sharing by providing a large layout for performances and exhibitions viewable by all. From a geothermal bore-field below grade, to energy generated from integrated green roofs, the building would strive for an eco-friendly approach the ground up. The jury members are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>maxine bailey<\/strong>, Executive Director of the Canadian Film Centre (CFC) and co-founder of the Black Artists Network in Dialogue (BAND)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meg Graham<\/strong>, Architect and Founder, Superk\u00fcl (Chair)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seema Jethalal<\/strong>, Former Regional Director General, Canadian Heritage, and inaugural Managing Director of Daniels Spectrum<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lori Marchand<\/strong>,\u00a0Managing Director, Indigenous Theatre at the National Arts Centre Ottawa<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sadie Marshall<\/strong>,\u00a0Artist<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Payne<\/strong>, Architect and Founder, Thomas Payne Architect<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marc Ryan<\/strong>, Landscape Architect and Founder, PublicWork<\/p>\n<p>The winning design is set to be announced the week of March 13, 2023.
