The outbuildings were being converted into holiday let accommodation when a stone wall collapsed on 40-year-old Steven Tyson on 8 October 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The married father of two daughters from Melbourne, suffered a catalogue of serious injuries, including a fractured skull, a bleed on the brain and multiple broken bones, including 11 of his ribs. He was rushed to hospital, where he spent the next 18 days in \u201cimmense pain\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ad-id=\"439734\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intersteels.com%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He said: \u201cThe pain was made worse by the fact I was unable to see my daughters in hospital due to the Covid-19 restrictions on visitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am still in pain today and struggle to put weight on my right ankle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to the traumatic head injury, I was unable to drive for six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ad-id=\"470639\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpeoplespartnership.co.uk%2Fabout-us%2Fwho-we-are%2Fprofit-for-people%2F%3Futm_source%3DConstruction%2BEnquirer%26utm_medium%3DBanner%2BAd%26utm_campaign%3DPeoples%2BPartnership%2BRebrand%26utm_id%3DPeoples%2BPartnership%2BRebrand%26utm_term%3DPeoples%2BPartnership%26utm_content%3DJan%2BCreative%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/03\/1679499006_168_peoples pension mpu.gif\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Derby Magistrates Court heard how the building had undergone significant structural alterations. It was while Tyson was clearing up outside, that the external face of the stone gable wall collapsed on top of him.<\/p>\n<p>An HSE investigation\u00a0 found that Edwards had failed to have a structural assessment of the outbuildings undertaken prior to starting the work. As a result, no measures had been identified or implemented to stabilise the building while underwent the alteration.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, there was no plan in place for dismantling parts of the building safely, exposing workers and members of the public to the risk of injury or death from the full or partial collapse of the structures.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ad-id=\"142065\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fplantworx.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3DConstruction_Enquirer%2B%26utm_medium%3DWebsite_MPU%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/PWX2023_300x250px@1x.gif\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Tyson, who has been left blind in one eye as well as losing hearing in his right ear, went on to say how the incident had left him unable to work in the construction industry.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Steven-Tyson1-766x1024-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-473151 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/03\/Steven-Tyson1-766x1024-1-390x521.jpg\" alt=\"-\" width=\"390\" height=\"521\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI might never be able to,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe injuries have also impacted on my hobbies, which included karate, dog walking and metal detecting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have also had therapy sessions to try and come to terms with the physical and psychological impacts of what happened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something I thought I would never have to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ad-id=\"142065\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fplantworx.co.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3DConstruction_Enquirer%2B%26utm_medium%3DWebsite_MPU%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/PWX2023_300x250px@1x.gif\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Edwards of Melbourne, Derbyshire, pleaded guilty to safety breaches and was made the subject of a 12-month community order and told to complete 80 hours of unpaid work.
