{"id":14946,"date":"2023-04-01T15:02:36","date_gmt":"2023-04-01T22:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/bechtel-to-begin-work-on-13b-texas-lng-project\/"},"modified":"2023-04-01T15:02:36","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T22:02:36","slug":"bechtel-to-begin-work-on-13b-texas-lng-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/bechtel-to-begin-work-on-13b-texas-lng-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Bechtel to begin work on $13B Texas LNG project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/files\/membership-default-internal\/\" class=\"memberhide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/20220718_175041000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><br\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Dive Brief:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>A major liquified natural gas project in Texas is moving ahead after years of planning.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>Last week, public utility company Sempra issued Bechtel a final notice to proceed on Phase 1 of the company\u2019s Port Arthur LNG plant, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sempra.com\/sempra-launches-port-arthur-lng-project\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>according to a press release<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>Total capital expenditures for Phase 1 are estimated at $13 billion, according to the release, and the contract was valued at $10.5 billion in October 2022, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panews.com\/2022\/10\/21\/sempra-bechtel-energy-amend-10-5-billion-agreement-for-port-arthur-lng-project\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>according to Port Arthur News<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Dive Insight:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Phase 1 is designed to include two natural gas liquefaction trains, two liquefied natural gas storage tanks and associated facilities at the site on Sabine Lake near Houston, according to the release. Trains 1 and 2 are expected to be commercially operational in 2027 and 2028, respectively, according to the release.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The project\u2019s Phase 1 is expected to create an estimated 5,000 highly skilled jobs during construction, according to Sempra. It will join a portfolio of large projects that Bechtel has commenced recently, including the high-profile <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/bechtel-selected-20b-intel-semiconductor-facility-ohio\/637437\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>$20 billion Intel semiconductor fab<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Bechtel\u2019s role on the project has been in the works since at least 2018, when the Reston, Virginia-based firm was selected as the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contractor for the project, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bechtel.com\/newsroom\/releases\/2018\/06\/bechtel-selected-epc-contractor-for-sempra-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>according to the company<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said that the project will cement the Lone Star State as the \u201cenergy capital of the world.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>However, liquified natural gas is not the only type of energy production taking place in the state \u2014 a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/texas-megaprojects-invest-in-clean-energy-bechtel-construction\/638642\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>wide variety of green energy projects<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> are advancing in Texas, including a $6 billion, 540-acre green hydrogen fuel plant in the Bay City area, which is also being built by Bechtel.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Port Arthur plant is not without controversy.
