Applications for 2023 are <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grants.gov\/web\/grants\/view-opportunity.html?oppId=347288\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>due Aug.\u00a01<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cThere are proven practices to prevent crashes between vehicles and wildlife, and with this investment, we\u2019re going to take commonsense steps to reduce collisions and make roads safer for rural and urban communities alike,\u201d Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt said in a statement.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dive Insight:<\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>There are <span><span>more than 1 million wildlife-vehicle collisions each year<\/span><\/span>, according to the FHWA, with such collisions leading to tens of thousands of injuries and causing over $8 billion in damage annually.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The U.S. Department of Transportation said the program supports the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/sites\/dot.gov\/files\/2022-02\/USDOT-National-Roadway-Safety-Strategy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>National Roadway Safety Strategy<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> it unveiled in January 2022, which aims to eliminate roadway deaths and serious injuries.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cBy launching the Wildlife Crossings Pilot Program, we are taking an important step to prevent deadly crashes in communities across the country and make America\u2019s roadways safer for everyone who uses them,\u201d Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a <span><span>statement<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Traffic deaths in the U.S. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smartcitiesdive.com\/news\/NHTSA-nine-month-2022-traffic-fatalities-decrease-pedestrian-cyclist-deaths-increase\/640038\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>declined by 0.2%<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> in the first nine months of 2022 compared with the same period in 2021, according to the latest National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates.
