{"id":15264,"date":"2023-04-10T21:31:25","date_gmt":"2023-04-11T04:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/orourke-to-switch-to-low-carbon-concrete-on-all-sites\/"},"modified":"2023-04-10T21:31:26","modified_gmt":"2023-04-11T04:31:26","slug":"orourke-to-switch-to-low-carbon-concrete-on-all-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/orourke-to-switch-to-low-carbon-concrete-on-all-sites\/","title":{"rendered":"O\u2019Rourke to switch to low carbon concrete on all sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/files\/membership-default-internal\/\" class=\"memberhide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/20220718_175041000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><br\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The move applies to all new projects that begin main construction from this month and follows a long-term research programme showing that a range of low carbon concrete options can be successfully deployed on projects as a like-for-like substitute for traditional concrete.<\/p>\n<p>Research has involved Laing O\u2019Rourke and Innovate UK working with the University of Cambridge and Sheffield University\u2019s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ad-id=\"163817\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.constructionenquirer.com%2Fdirectory%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The overall carbon reduction will be 28% when compared with the company\u2019s concrete usage in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Cathal O\u2019Rourke, Laing O\u2019Rourke\u2019s Chief Operating Officer, said: \u201cWe\u2019ve committed to being a net zero company before 2050 and we are looking at every possible measure to accelerate our progress. In construction, the greatest challenge is reducing scope 3 emissions \u2013 the embodied carbon in purchased materials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReducing all carbon emissions is a priority for our business. The built environment makes a significant contribution to global warming and constructors must work with clients and design partners to deploy new technologies and innovations that make modern methods the norm and enable us to build in less carbon intensive ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ad-id=\"95430\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnasc.org.uk%2Fmemberships%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/03\/CE_NASC-MPU_23..gif\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Construction Minister Nusrat Ghani said: \u201cReducing carbon emissions from concrete is essential to achieving net zero carbon by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m pleased to see the leadership Laing O\u2019Rourke is showing, through innovating and adopting the use of low-carbon concrete on all the construction projects it delivers\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Rossella Nicolin, Head of Sustainability for Europe, said:\u00a0\u201cThe expertise of our in-house concrete technologists, the experts who operate our advanced manufacturing facility in Nottinghamshire, and our supply chain partners, have all contributed to this significant step forward.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-mpu ad-mpu-inline\">\n<div class=\"sleeve\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ad-id=\"95499\" href=\"http:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/themes\/constructionenquirer\/adclick.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcisrs.org.uk%2F%3Futm_source%3Dconstruction-enquirer%26utm_medium%3Dbanner%26utm_campaign%3Dconstructionenq-ads\" target=\"_blank\" onclick=\"track_ad_click(this);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/02\/CE_CISRS-MPU_23.gif\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cLast year, 43 per cent of the concrete products we manufactured for our live projects were low carbon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s exciting to think this will rise to 100 per cent this year, and that very soon all our new projects will only use low carbon concrete.
