{"id":15694,"date":"2023-04-21T22:00:15","date_gmt":"2023-04-22T05:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/dartford-crossing-protest-civil-engineer-jailed-for-three-years\/"},"modified":"2023-04-21T22:00:19","modified_gmt":"2023-04-22T05:00:19","slug":"dartford-crossing-protest-civil-engineer-jailed-for-three-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/dartford-crossing-protest-civil-engineer-jailed-for-three-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Dartford Crossing protest civil engineer jailed for three years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/files\/membership-default-internal\/\" class=\"memberhide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/20220718_175041000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><br\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Morgan Trowland, 40 of Islington, was sentenced at Southend Crown Court today after his actions shut the crossing for nearly 48 hours last October.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of the protest he said: \u201cAs a professional civil engineer, each year as I renew my registration, I commit to acting within our code of ethics, which requires me to safeguard human life and welfare and the environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur government has enacted suicidal laws to accelerate oil production: killing human life and destroying our environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t challenge this madness in my desk job, designing bridges, so I\u2019m taking direct action, occupying the QE2 bridge until the government stops all new oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trowland was sentenced alongside accomplice Marcus Decker 34, of no fixed address, who was jailed for two years and seven months.<\/p>\n<p>Essex Police Detective Chief Inspector Louise Metcalfe, who oversaw the investigation, said: \u201cTrowland and Decker\u2019s actions were completely unacceptable. They were dangerous and they were incredibly disruptive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know they saw their actions as protest \u2013 they were not. They caused danger and disruption to many.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThankfully, our specially trained officers were able bring the incident to a safe conclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Golder, a Just Stop Oil spokesperson, said:\u201cJust Stop Oil will not be deterred by these draconian sentences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere they imprison one of us, ten more will take their place. When they imprison ten of us, one hundred will stand to take their place.
