Calling attention to the problem of construction industry tax fraud, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters (UBC) recently launched its first Community Builder recognition campaign to shine a light on some of the many Canadian contractors who play by the rules. The organization says the program looks to honour these companies\u2019 steadfast dedication to fair practices, worker rights and industry excellence.<\/p>\n

According to Statistics Canada, the gross domestic product (GDP) at market prices for underground economic activity in Canada was estimated to be $68.5 billion, or 2.7 per cent of the total GDP, in 2021.<\/p>\n

The recognition program launched in Canada is part of a broader annual industry campaign titled \u201cConstruction Industry Tax Fraud Days of Action\u201d that the UBC presents in April throughout Canada and the United States to combat tax fraud in the construction industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cBuilders who follow fair practices contribute to building their communities \u2014 roads, bridges, schools, hospitals and social services,\u201d stated Jason Rowe, UBC Canadian district vice-president. \u201cThey contribute to growth and development for all. Through UBC\u2019s Community Builder recognition campaign, we spotlight some of these well-deserving, honest and trusted contractors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2023 campaign saw UBC contractor partners recognized in the organization\u2019s five councils across Canada: Atlantic Canada Regional Council; Conseil R\u00e9gional Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois; National Construction Council; Millwright Regional Council; and Carpenters Regional Council.<\/p>\n
