Commerce Department launches application process for $500M in grants."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>Dive Brief:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cities now have the opportunity to be federally recognized as \u201ctech hubs\u201d\u00a0\u2014 indicating their potential to become globally competitive innovation centers in the next decade \u2014 and access a total of $500 million in funding through an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.gov\/news\/press-release\/2023\/05\/12\/biden-harris-administration-launches-first-tech-hubs-funding\" target=\"_blank\">application process launched Friday<\/a>\u00a0by the U.S. Department of Commerce.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>During the Regional Technology and Innovation Hub Program\u2019s first phase, the department will designate at least 20 tech hubs and award about $15 million in strategy development grants, with each recipient getting approximately $400,000 to $500,000. Applications are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.gov\/funding\/programs\/regional-technology-and-innovation-hubs\" target=\"_blank\">due Aug. 15<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The program aims to boost national and economic security, strengthen U.S. supply chains and create good-paying jobs. It will focus on key technology areas, including artificial intelligence, battery and advanced nuclear technologies, biotechnology, robotics, cybersecurity and disaster prevention or mitigation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dive Insight:<\/h3>\n<p>Most tech jobs go to only a few U.S. cities, \u201cbut that doesn\u2019t reflect our full potential,\u201d Commerce Secretary Gina <span>Raimondo\u00a0said<\/span> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecRaimondo\/status\/1657000258767814657?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">in a Friday Twitter video<\/a>. She noted that tech hubs will mean people don\u2019t have to leave their hometown to get a \u201cgreat-paying tech job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The hubs will be areas with a concentration of assets, capital, research and development, labor market and infrastructure that is \u201cstrongly relevant to the Hub\u2019s selected core technology area,\u201d according to a U.S.\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-05\/EDA_TECH_HUBS_Revised_Fact_Sheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Economic Development Administration fact sheet<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Only \u201cconsortia\u201d are eligible to apply and must include one or more higher education institutions; state, local or Tribal governments or agencies; economic development organizations; labor or workforce training organizations; and industry in the relevant technology, innovation or manufacturing sectors.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative aims to scatter the hubs across the nation, with at least three tech hubs designated in each of the Economic Development Administration\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.gov\/about\" target=\"_blank\">six regions<\/a>. At least a third of the hubs must significantly benefit a small and rural community, and at least two must benefit underserved communities in metropolitan areas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Tech Hubs initiative will strengthen so much more than just tech industries: it will support and impact the people, workers, communities, and physical infrastructure that is essential to a Tech Hub region,\u201d\u00a0Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Castillo said <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.gov\/news\/press-release\/2023\/05\/12\/biden-harris-administration-launches-first-tech-hubs-funding?utm_content=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_name=&amp;utm_source=govdelivery&amp;utm_term=\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Commerce Department\u2019s Economic Development Administration expects to launch a second phase in the fall, providing at least five tech hubs with implementation funding. Each recipient will receive approximately $50-75 million, with an average award of $65 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Tech Hubs Program was authorized through the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act.
