{"id":18631,"date":"2023-06-25T18:38:52","date_gmt":"2023-06-26T01:38:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/subcontractor-automation-boosts-profits-while-cutting-costs-report\/"},"modified":"2023-06-25T18:38:54","modified_gmt":"2023-06-26T01:38:54","slug":"subcontractor-automation-boosts-profits-while-cutting-costs-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/subcontractor-automation-boosts-profits-while-cutting-costs-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Subcontractor automation boosts profits while cutting costs: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Dive Brief:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>General contractors automating subcontractor management processes are seeing positive results in productivity, costs and profits, but roadblocks are still in some builders\u2019 paths, according to a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20230612005132\/en\/New-Study-Shows-Significant-Benefits-for-General-Contractors-Utilizing-Technology-to-Manage-Subcontractors\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>new study from Dodge Construction Network<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>The study, which Dodge performed in partnership with construction software firm GC Pay, reported 91% of contractors who used sub management technology had improved productivity, 81% had lower costs and 79% had higher profits.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>The study showed at least twice as many general contractors frequently experienced improved productivity and profitability at a high to very high level when compared to those who are less engaged with commercial solutions, according to the release.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Dive Insight:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The study surveyed mid-size U.S. contractors with $50 million to $500 million in annual revenue to evaluate their use of subcontractor management technology and to identify where new adoption will focus over the next year, per the report.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dodge\u2019s study benchmarked general contractors\u2019 use of technology for 12 key sub management processes, and then cut those into two categories \u2014 accounting and finance, and contract management, according to the report.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Tech adoption varied among participants. Those surveyed reported:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>9% automate 1-3 processes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>25% automate 4-6 processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>36% automate 7-9 processes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>30% automate 10-12 processes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Those contractors with higher levels of digital engagement saw the most benefits. For example, 53% of contractors in that group reported high levels of improvement for estimates and bidding, but only 13% of contractors with low to moderate digital engagement had a similar experience.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Those with high digital engagement also outpaced their peers dramatically in profitability, with 42% seeing an increase, compared to just 6% of contractors with low adoption rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>On the flip side, the report found that contractors that aren\u2019t currently automating some of these processes actively plan to do so in the near future, according to the release. For example, more than a third of these users expect to adopt technology for the schedule of values of subcontracts and change orders. About a quarter, or 25%, expect to adopt applications for general subcontract management.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>In addition, the survey found 37% of smaller companies, with revenues of $50 million to $100 million, are at very high digital engagement rates, compared with just 23% of larger ones with $100 million to $500 million in revenue, per the report.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The construction industry faces myriad issues around <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/subcontractors-feel-pinch-still-expect-growth-IIJA\/651259\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>labor shortages and late payments<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>. Payments in particular are a sensitive issue for subcontractors, who are less likely than general contractors to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/report-levelset-survey-general-contractor-subs-construction-payment\/623001\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>get paid on time<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Indeed, in 2023, subcontractors have increasingly paid out of pocket before getting paid themselves.
