{"id":19462,"date":"2023-07-13T01:35:52","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T08:35:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/property-developer-giants-join-call-for-planning-reset\/"},"modified":"2023-07-13T01:35:54","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T08:35:54","slug":"property-developer-giants-join-call-for-planning-reset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/property-developer-giants-join-call-for-planning-reset\/","title":{"rendered":"Property developer giants join call for planning reset"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/files\/membership-default-internal\/\" class=\"memberhide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/20220718_175041000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><br\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pair want to see a specific set of changes that would not require primary legislation or significant public funding to unblock brownfield site regeneration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The property companies are behind some of Britain\u2019s most significant regeneration projects, including Landsec\u2019s 24-acre Mayfield neighbourhood in central Manchester and British Land and AustralianSuper\u2019s 53-acre Canada Water in London.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a new report, the pair warn brownfield development\u00a0suffers more than any other form of development from the shortcomings of the current system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is despite broad political consensus on the need to deliver more new homes and economic growth on brownfield land.<\/p>\n<p>They warn successive changes to the planning system have resulted in layers of complexity that mean the system\u2019s default mode is to prevent or delay economic activity.<\/p>\n<p>These changes have added to the burden on planning authorities, meaning they have become increasingly stretched.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark Allan, chief executive officer at Landsec, said \u201cThe current planning system acts as a significant brake to growth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe believe that by making some necessary but simple changes to the existing planning regime, we can unlock this opportunity \u2013 for the benefit of the UK, for the economy and importantly for the communities we build for.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>British Land and Landsec roadmap for reform<\/h3>\n<hr>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Define brownfield urban regeneration sites as a separate planning category and focus on these opportunities to drive economic growth<\/li>\n<li>Secure quick wins and pilot new ways of working in progressive authorities<\/li>\n<li>Resource the planning system more effectively and reduce complexity.
