{"id":20319,"date":"2023-08-03T20:23:42","date_gmt":"2023-08-04T03:23:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/clayco-breaks-ground-on-4b-north-carolina-ev-plant\/"},"modified":"2023-08-03T20:23:43","modified_gmt":"2023-08-04T03:23:43","slug":"clayco-breaks-ground-on-4b-north-carolina-ev-plant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/clayco-breaks-ground-on-4b-north-carolina-ev-plant\/","title":{"rendered":"Clayco breaks ground on $4B North Carolina EV plant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>North Carolina\u2019s first electric vehicle plant broke ground amid the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/private-nonresidential-activity-stalls-public-construction-spending-grow\/689650\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>push to onshore manufacturing facilities<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> in the United States.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Clayco, a Chicago-based construction firm, kicked off phase one of a $4 billion EV manufacturing campus last week near Raleigh, North Carolina, according to a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/claycorp.com\/latest\/clayco-breaks-ground-on-2000-acre-vinfast-electric-vehicle-manufacturing-campus\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>company press release<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cClayco is breaking ground on the nation\u2019s first VinFast electric vehicle manufacturing campus,\u201d said Anthony Johnson, president of Clayco\u2019s industrial business unit. \u201cThis is a transformative project for the Raleigh-Durham economy and a major win for American manufacturing.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Last summer the state awarded a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/vinfastauto.us\/newsroom\/press-release\/vinfast-receives-12-billion-in-incentives-for-us-manufacturing-hub-in-north\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>$1.2 billion incentive package<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> to VinFast, a Vietnamese automotive company,\u00a0to build its first facility on American soil. The project also received critical financial support from the City of Sanford, Chatham County and the Golden Leaf Foundation, a North Carolina grant-making organization, according to the EV company.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The 3-million-square-foot plant, which has a phase one total investment of up to $2 billion, spans an area of about 1,800 acres. The project consists of five main production areas, including a body shop, general assembly, press shop, paint shop and an energy center, according to VinFast.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Phase one will focus on the construction of the manufacturing facilities for VinFast\u2019s VF 7, VF 8 and VF 9 electric cars, as well as additional support buildings, such as an office, training facility, a central energy plant, fire prevention, pump house facilities and a finished vehicle area. The supplier base for components and materials will be primarily concentrated in the U.S., Vietnam and a few other countries, according to VinFast.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>While the fast-growing Vietnamese auto company\u2019s imports don\u2019t currently qualify for a $7,500 federal EV rebate, those produced in its North Carolina factory might, <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/07\/28\/vietnams-ev-maker-vinfast-set-to-break-ground-on-delayed-us-factory.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>according to CNBC<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>. That would help the upstart take on U.S.-based EV stalwart Tesla.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Future expansion and updates for the factory will be identified in the next phase, according to the electric carmaker. Clayco expects the factory to start production in 2025, with a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles per year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Vietnamese auto company has additional facilities in Canada, Germany, France and the Netherlands. The company announced last year a total investment of $4 billion to build out its EV battery plant in North Carolina, according to <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/governor.nc.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2022\/03\/29\/governor-cooper-announces-vinfast-automotive-selects-north-carolina-electric-vehicle-assembly-plant\" target=\"_blank\">North Carolina Gov.
