Among them is\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/database\/projects\/maverick.32071\" target=\"_blank\">Maverick<\/a> at 333 King Street West, from\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/database\/companies\/empire-communities.7705\" target=\"_blank\">Empire Communities<\/a>.\u00a0Designed by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/database\/companies\/arcadis.8006\" target=\"_blank\">Arcadis<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 the Amsterdam-based global firm that acquired Toronto-based IBI Group in Fall 2022 \u2014 the building has risen prominently, melding cutting-edge architectural designs with the area&#8217;s rich history.<\/p>\n<p><imgx alt=\"Maverick, Toronto, Arcadis, Empire Communities\" class=\"image-display_default\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"insert-display_default-14096027-634c-44a1-9888-1a872a899534\" data-insert-attach=\"{\" id=\"\" data-insert-class=\"image-display_default\" data-insert-type=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.skyrisecities.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/articles\/2023\/08\/53683\/53683-161755.jpeg\" onclick=\"photo('https:\/\/cdn.skyrisecities.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/articles\/2023\/08\/53683\/53683-161755.jpeg', true, ''); return false;\" title=\"Looking southeast to the completed design of the Maverick, image from submission to City of Toronto\"\/><span class=\"image-description\">Looking southeast to the completed design of the Maverick, image from submission to City of Toronto<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/news\/2023\/02\/high-contrast-envelope-emerges-maverick-grows-above-king-west.51380\" target=\"_blank\">our previous update in February<\/a>, the project was already past its halfway mark, targeting a final height of 49 storeys.\u00a0Half a year later, construction has reached the mechanical penthouse, and the high-contrast envelope has risen to around three quarters of the tower.<\/p>\n<p>In late April, looking southwards, the Maverick&#8217;s unique architectural identity is evident. The tower&#8217;s matte black aluminum cladding is marked by square, punched windows and +-shaped black mullion, juxtaposed with reflective glazing sections wrapped around the northeast and southwest corners. Also in view in the image below, about 70m southeast, the western tower of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/database\/projects\/nobu-residences-toronto.15117\" target=\"_blank\">Nobu Residences<\/a>\u00a0asserts its presence, adding a contrasting cladding pattern and shuffled grid pattern to the evolving skyline.<\/p>\n<p><imgx alt=\"Maverick, Toronto, Arcadis, Empire Communities\" class=\"image-display_default\" data-entity-type=\"file\" data-entity-uuid=\"insert-display_default-03593a59-5251-48a9-813b-76a2b20ea2b8\" data-insert-attach=\"{\" id=\"\" data-insert-class=\"image-display_default\" data-insert-type=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.skyrisecities.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/articles\/2023\/08\/53683\/53683-161756.jpeg\" onclick=\"photo('https:\/\/cdn.skyrisecities.com\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/articles\/2023\/08\/53683\/53683-161756.jpeg', true, ''); return false;\" title=\"Looking south from Widmer Street in April, image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor Crainesinthe6ix\"\/><span class=\"image-description\">Looking south from Widmer Street in April, image by UrbanToronto Forum contributor Crainesinthe6ix<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Come mid-May from a vantage point that looks southwest to Maverick&#8217;s east elevation, progress on its third of four glazing sections can be seen on either side of the construction hoist. Another nearby construction project can be seen here in the towering presence of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/urbantoronto.ca\/database\/projects\/55-mercer.40109\" target=\"_blank\">55 Mercer<\/a>, set to rise 47 storeys, sharing the horizon with the distinctive Nobu Residences. The cranes, almost like a choreographed performance, are seen at varying altitudes, signalling the intense pace of construction here. We see the remnants of the 1850s&#8217; Hughes Terrace, a historic row house development from the mid-19th century, now hidden behind scaffold, mid-rejuvenation.
