{"id":21674,"date":"2023-09-07T22:40:57","date_gmt":"2023-09-08T05:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/older-homes-contributed-to-hawaii-fires-destruction\/"},"modified":"2023-09-07T22:40:58","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T05:40:58","slug":"older-homes-contributed-to-hawaii-fires-destruction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/older-homes-contributed-to-hawaii-fires-destruction\/","title":{"rendered":"Older homes contributed to Hawaii fire\u2019s destruction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dive Brief:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>Older, dense construction with little fire resistance helped the Lahaina, Hawaii, fire to rapidly spread, creating the seventh <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ibhs.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IBHSEarlyInsights-LahainaFire.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>most damaging wildfire in the U.S.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> since 1990 and the deadliest in the country in over 100 years, according to a new report from the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>Many of the homes burned in the fire had components of wildfire-resistant construction, but weak points \u2014 often due to more combustible materials or older building practices \u2014 helped fuel the conflagration, the report said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>About four in five buildings in Lahaina were single-family homes, largely built between the 1960s and 1980s. Nonetheless, newer homes and commercial construction used materials like concrete fiber board and stucco, which slowed the fire.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><span><span><span>Dive Insight:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The Aug. 8 fire claimed over 100 lives and over 2,000 buildings in West Maui, as it <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/hawaii-wildfire-damage-lahaina-maui-infrastructure-construction\/690903\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>battered the island\u2019s infrastructure<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>. The damage will likely total at least $6 billion, according to Hawaii Gov. Josh Green.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Lahaina had older electrical infrastructure above ground which contributed to over 14,000 households and businesses losing electricity.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Though aging buildings contributed, the largest contributor to the fire were dry grasslands from <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/08\/23\/how-two-centuries-of-extractive-agriculture-helped-set-the-stage-for-the-maui-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>extractive agricultural practices<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> and high winds.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>IBHS found one small beacon of good news in its report: An unnamed new development, built between 2019 and 2020, largely survived the worst of the blaze. The neighborhood \u2014 bordered by Front Street on the west and Honoapiilani Highway to the east \u2014 is composed of single-family homes and multifamily units.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The development lost no single-family structures, but four multifamily structures ignited.
