{"id":21883,"date":"2023-09-13T11:29:29","date_gmt":"2023-09-13T18:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/longest-hs2-green-tunnel-aims-to-avoid-faults-of-the-first\/"},"modified":"2023-09-13T11:29:31","modified_gmt":"2023-09-13T18:29:31","slug":"longest-hs2-green-tunnel-aims-to-avoid-faults-of-the-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/longest-hs2-green-tunnel-aims-to-avoid-faults-of-the-first\/","title":{"rendered":"Longest HS2 green tunnel aims to avoid faults of the first"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/files\/membership-default-internal\/\" class=\"memberhide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/20220718_175041000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><br\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/2022\/08\/17\/faults-found-on-giant-hs2-green-tunnel-segments\/\" target=\"_blank\">Faults were discovered<\/a> in the giant precast segments used to construct the first tunnel in Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire<\/p>\n<p>The same team of tunnel segment manufacturer Stanton Precast and\u00a0 main contractor EKFB \u2013 Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall \u2013 have now begun assembling the project\u2019s longest tunnel around Greatworth in West Northamptonshire.<\/p>\n<p>HS2 said: \u201cLessons learned during the construction of a similar green tunnel at Chipping Warden are being applied to the delivery of Greatworth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese include changes to quality control and the delivery and installation of the segments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shorter green tunnels are also being built at Wendover in Buckinghamshire, Burton Green in Warwickshire and in the London Borough of Hillingdon.<\/p>\n<p>The Greatworth cut-and-cover tunnel will be one-and-a-half miles long and made from more than 5,000 giant concrete segments.<\/p>\n<p>HS2 Ltd\u2019s Project Client Neil Winterburn, said: \u201cGreatworth is one of five green tunnels between London and Birmingham designed to protect the natural environment and reduce disruption for local communities \u2013 and it\u2019s great to see the first arches in position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>EKFB\u2019s Programme Director Emmanuel Rossignol, said: \u201cThe design and construction approach of this tunnel is unique to the UK, and there are many benefits associated with this methodology, including a reduction in our carbon footprint, but it\u2019s not been without its challenges along the way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur expert teams are to thank for their dedication as we continue to advance the construction programme across the Chipping Warden and Greatworth green tunnels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tunnel will be built in sections, with construction of the main structure expected to take around two years.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HS2 Timelapse | Work begins on HS2\u2019s longest \u2018Green Tunnel\u2019\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fJ-rKk8iNYk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
