For example, residential and nonbuilding construction fell 1% and 14%, respectively, according to Dodge. That bifurcation among sectors tells a story of haves and have nots that\u2019s weighing on the broader industry.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>\u201cDespite the August gain, the construction sector is running uphill,\u201d said Richard Branch, chief economist for Dodge Construction Network, in the release. \u201cFear of an imminent recession seems to have abated, which should provide a boost of confidence to the sector. However, higher interest rates, labor shortages and significantly tighter lending standards will weigh down starts in the final quarter of the year.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Dive Insight:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>On a positive note, it was the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/lng-texas-facility-construction-starts-july-dodge-richard-branch\/691097\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>second consecutive month-to-month increase<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span> for project kick offs, marking a move away from a <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/construction-starts-volatile-economy-dodge-richard-branch\/688696\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>trend of off-again, on-again growth<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><strong><span><span> <\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span><span><span><span><span><span>And across the U.S., total construction starts in August rose in three of four regions \u2013 the Midwest, South Atlantic and West. Beginnings in the South Central geography fell.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The report tracks three categories: nonresidential buildings,\u00a0nonbuilding construction activity and residential buildings.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Manufacturing bolsters nonresidential<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Nonresidential building starts gained 40% in August to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $475 billion, Dodge reported, due to the <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructiondive.com\/news\/manufacturing-construction-boom-tracker-map\/688140\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>sharp surge in manufacturing projects<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span><span><span><span><span><span>. Even so, the segment would have gained 24% when excluding these large manufacturing projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Commercial starts rose 8% in August, led by gains in parking structures and hotels, and institutional starts rose 35%, with all sectors but dormitories increasing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Manufacturing was the true workhorse for the sector in August, which saw its starts rise 285% on the backs of two large projects, according to Dodge. On a year-to-date basis through August, total nonresidential starts were 9% lower than that of 2022, and for the 12 months ending August 2023, total nonresidential building starts were 6% higher than that ending August 2022.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>The largest nonresidential projects that broke ground in August were:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>The $2.5 billion John Palmour Manufacturing Center for Silicon Carbide in Siler City, North Carolina.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>The $2 billion VinFast electrical vehicle plant in New Hill, North Carolina.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span><span><span><span><span>The $1.4 billion Midfield Satellite Concourse at Los Angeles International Airport in California.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"standard-heading\"><span><span><span><strong><span><span>Nonbuilding weakens<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Nonbuilding construction starts shrank in August, falling 14% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $380 billion, per Dodge.
