As such, salaries for these roles are going upward.

With a shortage of fully trained candidates in the pool of jobseekers, the authors of the report noted that many employers are now more open to hiring candidates without Canadian experience, providing them with opportunities to upskill, rather than expecting them to check all boxes on their first day.

“The convergence of Canada’s highest immigration rates in decades and significant skill shortages in the GC and developer construction sector has led to a heartening development,” stated Michael Scott, vice-president of the Building Division at Impact Recruitment. “Employers across the nation are increasingly providing opportunities to newcomers with valuable construction experience gained abroad.”

He says this trend is most pronounced in the Greater Toronto Area, but sees changes to immigration policies as moves that are positive for the industry. “It’s encouraging to see governmental discussions addressing the need for expedited recognition of overseas qualifications, which would further support the integration of skilled job seekers into the Canadian workforce,” he added.

The recruitment agency’s annual report opens discussions about trends and provides current salary data for hiring managers as well as real estate development, general contracting and construction management professionals.
