{"id":23034,"date":"2023-11-03T13:37:42","date_gmt":"2023-11-03T20:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/how-product-identifiers-can-enhance-your-building-process\/"},"modified":"2023-11-03T13:37:44","modified_gmt":"2023-11-03T20:37:44","slug":"how-product-identifiers-can-enhance-your-building-process","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/how-product-identifiers-can-enhance-your-building-process\/","title":{"rendered":"How Product Identifiers Can Enhance Your Building Process"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/files\/membership-default-internal\/\" class=\"memberhide\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2023\/01\/20220718_175041000_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"-\"><\/a><br\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>Have you considered the significance of a product\u2019s bar code when you shop at a supermarket?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 50-year-old invention contains a standardized product number essential to the operation of the whole value chain: the retail store, the distribution center, the transportation company, the warehouse, the vendor, and the producer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Standardized numbers also allow us consumers to find information about the ingredients of products, make price comparisons, and get food delivered to our door.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shouldn\u2019t we be able to do the same in construction?\u00a0<\/strong>After all, we use thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, of different products in a project.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-standards-to-utilize\">What standards to utilize?<\/h3>\n<p>Last week, I wrote\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aalto.fi\/fi\/uutiset\/rakentamisen-toimitusketjut-hallintaan-gs1-standardein\" target=\"_blank\">a Finnish article<\/a>\u00a0about a Building 2030 research project that studied supply chain management using standardized product IDs.<\/p>\n<p>The research recommends using universal GS1 numbers in addition to or as a replacement for proprietary product identifiers.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gs1.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">GS1<\/a>\u00a0is an international non-profit that provides unique identifiers for manufacturers\u2019 products. Here are examples of valuable IDs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>GTIN<\/strong>\u00a0(Global Trade Item Number) identifies a raw material, product, or package at the trade name level. A can of paint, a kitchen cabinet, or a prefabricated wall panel, for example, can get a unique GTIN code.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to differentiate individual instances of the same product, use\u00a0<strong>SGTIN<\/strong>\u00a0(Serialized Global Trade Item Number.)\u00a0For example, it is possible to identify precisely the same partition element on different floors with an SGTIN.<\/li>\n<li>If you deliver pallets or shipping containers to the construction site and want to track them, use an\u00a0<strong>SSCC<\/strong>\u00a0(Serial Shipping Container Code).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can use these codes in design, bills of materials, procurement, installation, handover, and building operation. The IDs are keys to linked data that can reside in in-house or public databases. You can read the identifiers with scanners or mobile devices and send the data to the cloud.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-we-use-standardized-product-numbers\">Why should we use standardized product numbers?<\/h3>\n<p>Using standardized product identifiers offers many benefits, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Everyone involved can systematically track the status of orders and deliveries throughout the project.<\/li>\n<li>It is possible to automate design, procurement, and logistics data workflows.<\/li>\n<li>You can spot missing or incorrect product deliveries early, not during installation.<\/li>\n<li>Performing emission and embodied carbon calculations are more straightforward with actual product data.<\/li>\n<li>Installation instructions and other relevant data are easy to manage and find.<\/li>\n<li>The as-built data is accumulated throughout the building process.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-implement\">How to implement?<\/h3>\n<p>The research report points out that the required GS1 standards and tools already exist, but the implementation requires commitment from the whole industry.<\/p>\n<p>Make-To-Stock products already have GTIN codes. The next step is to extend the use into the Manufacture-to-Order and Design-to-Order products, like prefabricated building parts.
