It seems we all agree the digitisation of
\nconstruction and real estate is an imperative for buildings to be designed,
\nconstructed and operated more cost-effectively and deliver the changing needs
\nof the building\u2019s occupants.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

There is much discussion about the benefits
\nof AI, MI, Digital Twins and not forgetting BIM to support the digital
\ntransformation of the built environment.\u00a0\u00a0
\nYet I\u2019m unconvinced these technologies will deliver their promised
\nbenefit without the whole supply chain addressing the underlying fundamental
\nneed to deliver structured data, and I repeat the need for structured
\ndata.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The delivery of structured data is the
\nbedrock it\u2019s what AI, MI and digital twins consume to enable them to deliver
\nthe promised benefits claimed.\u00a0\u00a0 Without
\nstructured data, data can\u2019t be guaranteed it exists, it\u2019s accurate and\/or
\nreliable and therefore most importantly actionable.\u00a0 Actionable is the only real reason to capture
\ndata during design, construction and handover for use during construction and
\noperations.<\/p>\n

Where do we start to ensure the data is
\nactionable?\u00a0 The bedrock of structured
\ndata is to ensure the correct classification of an asset\/element \u2013 \u201cif it looks
\nlike a duck, it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck it\u2019s a duck not an
\neagle, swan etc\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Why is classification critical in the
\ndigital world?\u00a0 Because increasingly the
\ndata generated will be consumed by different by downstream solutions for
\nestimating, scheduling and management etc.\u00a0
\nThese solutions can\u2019t work effectively if there is the slightest
\nambiguity in the data they are consuming and they can\u2019t make decisions for
\nthemselves let\u2019s not forget they are only machines!<\/p>\n

It still a surprise to me after all these
\nyears since the introduction of BIM mandates across the world, \u00a0the development of PAS 1192 in the UK and more
\nrecently ISO11960 we are still having arguments in project meetings about why
\nit\u2019s so important to structure data.<\/p>\n

Once we overcome the sectors inertia to
\nembracing structured data then the construction and real estate world will finally
\nbe able to embark on the successful digitisation journey delivering a more
\npredictable and actionable operational environment.<\/p>\n
