Richard Harpham, Vice President Software Products at\u00a0Katerra, gave this presentation titled <\/strong>Silicon and Sawdust \u2013 Deconstructing Construction<\/strong><\/em> at <\/strong>NXT BLD 2019<\/strong><\/a>. He talks about how <\/strong>Katerra<\/strong><\/a> operates and <\/strong>Apollo<\/strong><\/a>, a software platform and suite of applications designed to support building projects and teams from beginning to end. <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026we\u2019re thinking about these six things: cost, schedule, materials, labor, performance, and location. We feel that if we can have the data on those six things, always available, within every element of the building then we\u2019re able to make much better, earlier, faster decisions. Because if we know about this information for everything that\u2019s in our supply chain then we can do a lot better,\u201d Harpham says. \u201cThat\u2019s what led us to create this thing called Katerra Apollo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Katerra was looking for technologies that could support its vision, but, as Harpham puts it, \u201cit wasn\u2019t configurable the way we needed it, couldn\u2019t really customize it, or it was just not moving at the pace that our company was.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEarlier, persistent, actionable data\u2026it kind of underlies everything we do with the software and how we think about what type of contextual tool is needed at every part of that process,\u201d Harpham says. \u201cIt means we have to think a lot harder about cost and schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, estimation is professional guessing. And they\u2019re very good at it. It\u2019s very good but really, it\u2019s making up a horrible gap that we have in our process. And BIM\u2019s not really solving that,\u201d Harpham points out.<\/p>\n
