Photo courtesy of WomenBuild.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While at an industry golf tournament for the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmca.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edmonton Construction Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ECA), director of membership and networking engagement, Caroline Bowen was shocked to see she was one of the only women in attendance. \u201cThere were 144 men at this tournament and maybe four women,\u201d says Bowen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it was disappointing to Bowen, that she was one of the only women at the event, it wasn\u2019t something she was unused to. <\/span>Within the skilled trades, only five per cent of the industry is made up of women, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.getatrade.com\/blog\/women-are-the-solution-to-canadas-skilled-trades-shortage#:~:text=Currently%2C%20only%205%25%20of%20skilled,hairstyling%20and%20aesthetics%20being%20women.\" target=\"_blank\">Statistics Canada<\/a> \u2013 and that includes hairdressing and styling. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The large gap in the demographic, makes women a clear minority in the trades, especially construction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this disparity was the push Bowen needed to make a change within her own association. The ECA had other sub-groups for members like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmca.com\/ybg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Young Builders Group<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmca.com\/peg\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professional Estimating Group,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but nothing specifically for women. Initially, she was a bit hesitant to approach the board of directors because she was concerned about creating a sort of \u201cboys club,\u201d says Bowen, who makes a point to say it is not an \u201cus against them,\u201d and despite the group being for women \u2013 the space is inclusive to all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had never done anything just for women before,\u201d says Bowen who had several female members approach her and ask about female-based events. A golfer herself, Bowen decided to establish a women\u2019s golf tournament for ECA members in the summer of 2018. \u201cA lot of us couldn\u2019t even golf,\u201d jokes Bowen. \u201cBut it was all in good fun and making connections.\u201d The tournament initially started with only 16 women \u2013 but by the following summer, the number quickly doubled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Realizing she had something special on her hands, Bowen organized a speaker series and invited women across the industry to discuss their experiences in the trades. The series completely sold out with 130 women in attendance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cWe came up with a mandate and presented it to the board,\u201d says Bowen. And by 2020 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edmca.com\/womenbuild\/\" target=\"_blank\">WomenBuild<\/a> was established as an official sub-group of the ECA. \u201cWomenBuild is meant to inspire, connect and motivate women in our industry to lean on one another and work together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, there are around 700 members in WomenBuild, including project manager Carolyn Aumiller.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1003294565\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1003294565\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1003294565\" src=\"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2024\/07\/WomenBuild-Oct-1-min-630x420.jpg\" alt=\"-\" width=\"630\" height=\"420\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-1003294565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caroline Bowen (left) with WomenBuild speaker. Photo courtesy of WomenBuild.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think a lot of women in this industry are afraid to come to events,\u201d says Aumiller. \u201cBut when more women started to participate and the word got out, we felt more comfortable networking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aumiller has been a part of WomensBuild for the last five years, attending golf tournaments and events from the beginning. Aumiller shares that at the last WomenBuild golf tournament, 144 women attended. \u201cIt was absolutely amazing, it was the largest women\u2019s tournament Edmonton had ever seen,\u201d says Aumiller. \u201cSo many women came out and supported each other, it\u2019s a special camaraderie. \u201c\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most important things WomenBuild offers to its members is the space for open dialogue about issues that specifically impact them. \u201cSometimes it is difficult to have conversations in a male-dominated industry,\u201d says Bowen. \u201cSo we\u2019re balancing it out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To keep male leaders in the industry knowledgeable on the issues impacting women, Bowen often invites them to meetings. One female leader on the WomenBuild shared there was no toilet seat in the jobsite outhouse. \u201cA bunch of women were like \u2018Yes, that happened to me too,\u2019\u201d says Bowen. Ultimately, this discussion led to the concern being addressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re all in the same boat,\u201d says Aumiller who agrees having a place for sharing stories, ideas and career tips amongst other women is incredibly valuable. Both Bowen and Aumiller hope to see more sub-groups like WomenBuild become more common in every province.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Aumiller, having more accessible female-led groups in the trades industry may encourage more girls to pursue construction and similar industries. \u201cIt would be nice for them to know there is a network and support.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLike it or not women are a minority in the industry, there are not a ton of us, but we are growing,\u201d says Bowen. \u201cI hope we can inspire other women to join and to not be nervous.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bowen hopes to see more groups like WomenBuild develop across the country.
