January employment growth in Canada\u2019s construction sector outpaced the rate of increase in the rest of the economy by a factor of three, according to the most recent Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada.<\/p>\n
The industry saw 19,000 more workers than in December, an increase of 1.2 per cent. That built on a net increase of 47,000 workers, a rise of almost three per cent, posted from June to December 2024. On a year-over-year basis, employment in construction was up by 3.6 per cent, or 58,000 positions in January.<\/p>\n
Overall, Canada\u2019s employment ranks increased by 76,000 workers in January, a gain of 0.4 per cent from December. The employment rate rose 0.1 percentage points to 61.1 per cent, and the unemployment rate declined 0.1 percentage points to 6.6 per cent. The total number of unemployed people was little changed at 1.5 million in January but was up by 251,000, or 20.2 per cent, from a year earlier.<\/p>\n
While the unemployment rate in Canada has declined in the past two months, it was higher in January, at 6.6 per cent, than 12 months earlier when it was at 6.1 per cent. With cooling labour market conditions, Statistics Canada reports the perceived likelihood of finding new employment is on the decline, which aligns with a survey suggesting employees may be more likely to seek stability in their current job.<\/p>\n
The job changing rate, which measures the proportion of workers who remained employed from one month to the next but who had changed jobs, was 0.4 per cent in January. This was lower than the corresponding proportion in January 2024 and lower than the pre-pandemic average of 0.7 per cent for January from 2017 to 2019.<\/p>\n
In addition, 6.1 per cent of permanent employees in January reported that they were planning to leave their job in the next 12 months. This is down from the 6.9 per cent reported in January of last year.<\/p>\n
