WASHINGTON \u2014 Canada\u2019s energy minister says Ottawa and the provinces should discuss the possibility of an oil pipeline to Eastern Canada to improve energy security.<\/p>\n
Jonathan Wilkinson says it\u2019s a \u201cvulnerability\u201d for Canada to export so much of its oil to the United States in the context of the Donald Trump administration\u2019s tariff threats.<\/p>\n
He also says the fact that Ontario and Quebec are served by Enbridge Line 5, an oil pipeline that runs through the Great Lakes states, creates \u201csome degree of uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wilkinson told reporters on a call from Washington, D.C., that the Trans Mountain pipeline to Canada\u2019s West Coast, which the government bought in 2018, was an \u201cimportant investment\u201d despite the controversy it caused.<\/p>\n
U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s threats of imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods \u2014 and 10 per cent tariffs on energy \u2014 have renewed interest in a pipeline to move oil to the east for shipment overseas.<\/p>\n
Quebec Premier Fran\u00e7ois Legault said earlier this week that there is still no social acceptability for an oil pipeline through the province, but suggested Trump\u2019s actions could change the situation.<\/p>\n
