The $393.7 million gain over December’s results included a 2.3 per cent increase in the residential sector, which hit $15.4 billion, while the non-residential sector was up 0.8 per cent to $6.7 billion. Year over year, investment in building construction grew 5.7 per cent in January.

Ontario’s multi-unit component led the overall increase in the residential sector. While gains were seen in four provinces and two territories, Ontario posted the largest jump, seeing growth of 6.3 per cent. The dollar value of the rise in Canada’s most populous province outpaced the $61.6 million contraction in Manitoba, which led decliners as it came in 12.3 per cent lower than figures posted in December.

Investment in multi-unit construction was a bright spot in January, rising $497.5 million to reach $8.2 billion, with Ontario leading the way. Single-family home investment mitigated the overall gains, however, as that component fell $155.5 million to $7.2 billion, with declines being recorded in eight provinces and one territory.

Investment in the non-residential sector continued its path to record highs again in January, with construction increasing $51.7 million to $6.7 billion for the month. This marked the sixth consecutive monthly increase. Much of the recent growth has come in the institutional and industrial components, which both reached a record high in January.

The institutional component rose $38.8 million to $2 billion in January, while investment in the industrial component increased $22.5 million to $1.5 billion. The commercial component bucked the trend, decreasing $9.5 million to $3.3 billion, following five consecutive monthly increases. Compared to January of 2024, the industrial segment was up 7.6 per cent, the institutional segment gained 13.4 per cent, and the commercial segment was up 1.4 per cent.

www.statcan.gc.ca

Print this page

[ad_2]

This article was originally posted at Source link

[ad_1] Investment in non-residential building construction, January 2025.
