The University of Guelph\u2019s Master of Real Estate (MRE) program<\/a> is designed to prepare professionals for leadership roles in commercial real estate. As one of only three programs of its kind in Ontario, it sets itself apart with a focus on sustainable development and industry collaboration. UrbanToronto spoke with Dr. Diana Mok, an associate professor at the university, to learn more.\u00a0<\/p>\n The program offers a flexible structure to accommodate full-time students and working professionals. The full-time stream is completed in 12 months, while part-time students can extend their studies over 24 months. Eight courses combine online learning with biweekly evening sessions held on campus at the\u00a0Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, exploring finance, market analysis, asset management, and sustainable development. \u201cOur program bridges academic knowledge and theory with the industry \u2013 it\u2019s very hands-on, very practical, and geared towards someone looking to boost their career,\u201d said Mok.\u00a0<\/p>\n Courses are delivered through a team-teaching model that combines academic instructors with industry practitioners, giving students both theoretical insights and practical knowledge. For example, the real estate development course follows the entire development process from property acquisition to project completion and marketing. By alternating between professors and industry leaders, the course ensures students gain a well-rounded understanding of best practices and current challenges in the field.\u00a0The program has a unique partnership with a number of industry professionals which resulted in the establishment of the Real Estate Program Advisory Board (REPAB)<\/a>. This board offers continued support and guidance to both faculty and students enrolled in the undergraduate and master of real estate programs.<\/p>\n The MRE program culminates in the chance for students to apply their accrued knowledge to real-world situations. \u201cThe program\u2019s capstone project is designed around a burning industry question, where students work alongside both professors and industry representatives to address a real-world challenge,\u201d Mok explained. Taking place in the final four months of the program, it has students directly engage with practitioners, gaining insights into current market conditions while building valuable connections.\u00a0<\/p>\n Graduates will be prepared for a range of career paths in the commercial real estate industry, including sales, market analysis, and real estate finance, while others may pursue positions in asset management or work with REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts).<\/p>\n The program\u2019s emphasis on practical skills also opens doors to roles in development analysis and commercial financing. \u201cOur real estate undergrad program has been around for more than 30 years, giving us a strong alumni network in the GTA industry,\u201d said Mok. The program benefits from a well-established industry network, giving students access to a strong professional community and mentorship. This extensive network has played an important role in shaping the Master’s program, with industry advisors contributing to ensure the curriculum reflects real-world demands.\u00a0<\/p>\n The university\u2019s location offers a living environment within commuting distance of the GTA.
