Almost 1,100 participants engaged in hands-on training, explored skilled trades career pathways and connected with industry professionals at this year\u2019s Tools in the Trades Boot Camp workshops, put on by Support Ontario Youth (SOY).<\/p>\n
\u201cOur mission has always been to provide a gateway into the skilled trades through hands-on learning and direct industry connections,\u201d said Melanie Winter, SOY\u2019s executive director. \u201cThis year\u2019s success demonstrates the ongoing need for accessible training opportunities and the impact they have on future apprentices.\u201d<\/p>\n
Of the 1,089 participants in the industry-led workshops who gained practical trade experience, SOY reports that 71 have already secured employment, with more career opportunities in progress. The Employment Ontario program is funded in part by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to express my sincere gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the boot camp,\u201d stated Oto-obong Moses Eshiet. \u201cThe experience was invaluable, providing education, leadership, hands-on training and exposure to industry best practices that have further solidified my passion for the trade.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tools in the Trades Boot Camp is a series of free, one-day events designed to introduce participants to the skilled trades. The workshops provide hands-on training, networking opportunities with industry professionals, and a complimentary starter tool kit to help kickstart careers. The program supports a number of skilled trades sectors, including construction, industrial and motive power, covering over 140 skilled trades available in Ontario.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a woman who is new to the trades, my experiences at Tools in the Trades helped me overcome barriers within myself as I worked toward obtaining an Apprenticeship,\u201d explained participant Amanda Vey. \u201cThrough guided learning and time on the tools, I gained new skills and faced my fears.\u201d<\/p>\n
