A significant philanthropic offer from the Weston family could set the stage for a renewed Queen\u2019s Park North<\/a>, one of Toronto\u2019s oldest downtown green spaces. Dedicated in 1860 as the country\u2019s first municipal park, and named in honour of Victoria who reigned at the time, the site sits just north of the Ontario Legislature and serves as a well-trodden link between university campuses, cultural institutions, and civic life, as well as a place to relax amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.\u00a0<\/p>\n Now, City Council has approved a motion to negotiate a proposed $50 million donation from the Weston Foundations to fund extensive improvements to the park and additional support for long-term programming and upkeep. Public consultations would follow once “terms and conditions satisfactory to the [City’s] General Manager, in a form satisfactory to the City Solicitor and in compliance with the Donations to the City of Toronto for Community Benefits Policy” are agreed to. The initiative by philanthropist Hilary Weston, former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and partly triggered by a column by Marcus Gee in The Globe and Mail, looks to improve the park’s amenities. Early visions for the revitalized park suggest a mix of cultural, ecological, and seasonal programming, including potential features like a skating rink, outdoor caf\u00e9, and amenities such as food options and public washrooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n Though a final design is a ways from being formulated, the City has committed to preserving the park\u2019s mature tree canopy, including its rare butternut and oak specimens, while creating new spaces for gathering, Indigenous placekeeping, environmental education, and year-round use. Conceptual renderings prepared by landscape architects\u00a0Janet Rosenberg & Studio<\/a> remain preliminary and will evolve through public and Indigenous engagement planned for later this year.<\/p>\n Public consultation could begin later this spring, with City staff to facilitate community and Indigenous engagement. Feedback gathered during this phase would inform the terms of a formal donation agreement and guide the development of design options through the summer and fall. A report back to Council is expected by late 2025, with detailed design work and contractor selection scheduled for early 2026. If timelines hold, construction could begin by the following summer.<\/p>\n While Queen\u2019s Park North received upgrades in 2019, including new pathways and improved accessibility, many people felt the work fell short of what the park could offer. Complaints about litter, broken infrastructure, and patchy lawns have persisted, drawing some attention in local media.
