The Selsey Coastal Scheme will overhaul the ageing sea walls, groynes and beach defences protecting the peninsula\u2019s low-lying coastline.<\/p>\n
With existing structures increasingly prone to failure, the council is advancing a full-scale capital works programme planned to run from 2030 to 2040.<\/p>\n
Prior to the construction of the existing sea wall in the 1950\u2019s, Selsey was reported as one of the fastest eroding coastlines in England.<\/p>\n
A feasibility study completed in 2023 backed the viability of a major scheme, leading to successful funding for the current options appraisal and outline design stage.<\/p>\n
Early designs from consultant Royal Haskoning DHV propose encapsulating or replacing the current reinforced concrete sea walls and timber groynes, particularly along East and West Beaches.<\/p>\n
To shape the delivery approach, Chichester council is calling for contractors with experience in large-scale coastal and civil engineering to register interest in a preliminary market engagement process running until 2 May 2025.<\/p>\n
Engagement activities will include site visits, workshops and virtual sessions to explore constructability, programme sequencing, temporary works, and cost benchmarks.<\/p>\n
