CHATHAM, ONT. \u2014 A Chatham, Ont. company that specializes in concrete foundations has been fined after a worker was killed cutting down a tree on a project near 354 Gould Rd. in the Township of Dawn-Euphemia.<\/p>\n

John Harris Concrete Ltd. was fined $85,000 and convicted on Jan. 13 by Justice of the Peace Susan Whelan in Provincial Offences Court in Sarnia.<\/p>\n

According to an Ontario court bulletin, on Oct. 26, 2022, one of the company\u2019s five workers was clearing brush and felling trees from the area around a drainage ditch when they were fatally injured by a tree.<\/p>\n

An investigation by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development found while the worker had been trained to operate a chainsaw safely, they were not trained on tree felling.<\/p>\n

As a result, John Harris Concrete Ltd. failed, as an employer, to provide training on how to safety fell trees to the worker, as required by\u00a0section 25(2)(a)<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0Occupational Health and Safety Act.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
