Observed during the first full week of April, Window Safety Week coincides with the arrival of spring when people being to open their windows, thus drastically increasing the risk of child falls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/health.ucdavis.edu\/news\/headlines\/more-than-3000-children-are-injured-each-year-from-falling-out-of-windows\/2024\/05\" target=\"_blank\">UC Davis Health,<\/a> \u201cEach year, around eight children, age five or under, die and about another 3,300 are injured from falling out of windows in the United States.\u201d Some may rely on night latches, vent limiters, or window screens to prevent these accidents, however, these devices do not meet ASTM standards and will not prevent against child falls.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/store.astm.org\/f2090-21.html\" target=\"_blank\">ASTM F2090-21,<\/a> \u201cWindow opening control devices provide a means that the window, when opened in an initial operation, will satisfy the <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Newsroom\/News-Releases\/2011\/CPSC-Parents-Caregivers-Should-Consider-Safety-Before-Opening-Windows\" target=\"_blank\">CPSC<\/a> recommendation to open less than four inches. The four-in. dimension is drawn from related building codes and is universally accepted as the appropriate dimensions to prevent a child from passing through balcony or guard railing systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to this, in order to comply with <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IRC2021P2\/chapter-3-building-planning#IRC2021P2_Pt03_Ch03_SecR310\" target=\"_blank\">The International Residential Code (IRC)<\/a>, \u201cBasements, habitable attics and every sleeping room shall have not less than one operable emergency escape and rescue opening\u2026Window opening control devices and fall prevention devices complying with ASTM F2090-21 shall be permitted for use on windows serving as a required emergency escape and rescue opening and shall be not more than 70 inches above the finished floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vent limiters and night latches allow for ventilation, while providing additional protection against unwanted intruders. However, they are not ASTM F2090-21 certified and do not comply with the IRC Section R310 requirements for emergency and escape and rescue openings. However window hardware manufacturers offer solutions, such as the <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.angel-ventlock.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Angel WOCD<\/a> from Roto, that fulfill both of these requirements in addition to <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.en-standard.eu\/bs-en-14351-1-2006-a2-2016-windows-and-doors-product-standard-performance-characteristics-windows-and-external-pedestrian-doorsets\/?srsltid=AfmBOopYIp9iWkmZxmJ3zrLgLUzrnJ-pMdM2r0rmADnDne8VPGaDTP2C\" target=\"_blank\">European (BS EN 14351-1:2006) Standards<\/a> and the UK Police <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.protectuk.police.uk\/secured-design-sbd\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Secured By Design\u2019<\/a> initiative. Such WOCDs limit the window opening to prevent falls, provide ventilation and surpass all forced-entry tests.
