After years of\u00a0planning\u00a0and fundraising,\u00a0construction\u00a0<\/a>has officially started on the $80 million expansion of\u00a0Tampa<\/a>, Florida<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0Straz\u00a0Center for the Performing Arts.\u00a0<\/p>\n A groundbreaking ceremony was held April 6 at the center\u2019s grounds along the Hillsborough River.\u00a0<\/p>\n Global architecture firm\u00a0DLR Group<\/a>, which has worked on\u00a0performance centers<\/a>\u00a0across the U.S., designed the expansion, while Clearwater, Florida-based\u00a0Creative Contractors<\/a> is handling the construction.\u00a0<\/p>\n The commercial construction project\u00a0<\/a>is expected to be completed in 2027. When it\u2019s done, visitors will notice a new event center and outdoor pavillions, a fine-dining restaurant, and a redesigned road system that DLR says\u00a0\u201cbetter connects the Straz to the river and downtown core.\u201d<\/p>\n April 2025\u2019s groundbreaking has been almost 20 years in the making. Calls for expansion\u00a0began back in 2008<\/span><\/a>. It took another eight years for renderings\u00a0<\/span>to be\u00a0released<\/span><\/a>. Now, almost 10 years later, the Straz is just a couple of more years away from making the upgrades a reality.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Back in 2021, the City of Tampa approved\u00a0$25 million in funding<\/span>\u00a0for the expansion, while Hillsborough County chipped in $23 million.
