BRAMPTON, ONT. \u2014 A manufacturer of clay bricks and concrete blocks, Brampton Brick Limited is facing a significant fine in relation to the death of a worker at its facility on Hurontario Street in 2023.<\/p>\n
According to an Ontario court bulletin, the incident took place on June 8, 2023, when a worker was helping to remove cement build-up on equipment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The worker climbed onto a mud conveyor in the plant\u2019s mixer area while carrying a hammer and was unaware that a skip hoist, a device for lifting materials, was in automatic mode and the hoist bucket itself was overhead.<\/p>\n
When the hoist automatically engaged, the hoist bucket lowered resulting in a fatal injury.<\/p>\n
An investigation by the Ministry of Labor, Immigration, Training and Skills Development found the mixer area was not equipped with adequate machine guarding.<\/p>\n
Thus, the company failed to ensure adequate machine guarding that prevents access to a pinch point in accordance with\u00a0section 25<\/a>\u00a0of Ontario Regulation 851. This is an offence pursuant to\u00a0section 66(1)<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0the Occupational Health and Safety Act.<\/p>\n Following a guilty plea in Provincial Offences Court, Brampton on Feb. 4, 2025, the company was fined $225,000 by Justice of the Peace Peter Karageorgos.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
