WASHINGTON \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House \u201cwithin the next week.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI spoke to him yesterday,\u201d Trump said of Carney. \u201cHe couldn\u2019t have been nicer and I congratulated him.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carney and Trump spoke on the phone Tuesday after the Liberals\u2019 stunning win in Monday\u2019s election \u2014 a come-from-behind victory that was driven by many Canadians\u2019 anger over the president\u2019s tariffs and taunts about making Canada a U.S. state.<\/p>\n
Carney has said previously he\u2019s open to meeting with Trump if the president starts respecting Canadian sovereignty and is willing to talk about a common approach to trade.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister\u2019s Office did not confirm a date for the meeting between the two leaders. The PMO\u2019s readout of Tuesday\u2019s phone call said only that Trump and Carney would meet in the near future.<\/p>\n
Trumps said he expects to have a \u201cgreat relationship\u201d with Canada.<\/p>\n
During the election campaign, Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre both sought to present themselves as the best person to navigate the tense relationship with Trump\u2019s administration. Carney and Poilievre both condemned Trump\u2019s tariffs and threats throughout the campaign.<\/p>\n
The president said Wednesday both Carney and Poilievre \u201chated Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it was the one that hated Trump I think the least that won,\u201d he said. \u201cI actually think the Conservative hated me much more than the so-called Liberal.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carney called on voters to give the Liberals a majority mandate so they could push back on Trump\u2019s threats. The party fell short after Conservatives picked up seats in Ontario.<\/p>\n
Trump said Canada\u2019s \u201ctight race\u201d will make it \u201cvery complicated for the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
