{"id":30663,"date":"2025-05-30T06:26:19","date_gmt":"2025-05-30T13:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/thames-water-seeks-tunnelling-contractors\/"},"modified":"2025-05-30T06:26:19","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T13:26:19","slug":"thames-water-seeks-tunnelling-contractors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/thames-water-seeks-tunnelling-contractors\/","title":{"rendered":"Thames Water seeks tunnelling contractors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-498271\">\n\t<!-- .entry-header --><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The utility giant has issued a formal tender for the tunnelling and connection works after a year of market engagement.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"377\" data-end=\"670\">The twin-tunnel scheme forms a central part of its long-term Water Resource Management Plan, approved by government and backed by Ofwat for the AMP8 control period.<\/p>\n<p>The tunnelling and connection works are being tendered as a two-stage NEC4 contract with up to four bidders due to be shortlisted for final bids.<\/p>\n<p>Works include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1155\" data-end=\"1321\">\n<p data-start=\"1157\" data-end=\"1321\">A 4.2km tunnelled conveyance route using a 3.5m diameter TBM from Mogden Sewage Treatment Works to a new discharge point on the Thames upstream of Teddington Weir<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1472\">\n<p data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1472\">A 150m pipe-jacked 2.2m diameter water transfer pipe from a new abstraction point to the existing Thames Lee Tunnel, linking with East London\u2019s reservoir system<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1474\" data-end=\"1548\">Four access shafts will also be constructed as part of the tunnel works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1589\">Head of procurement and supply chain Mohit Farmah said: \u201cWe\u2019re seeking industry leading tunnelling experts to help us deliver this nationally significant infrastructure project.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1239\" data-end=\"1589\">\u201cThis scheme will be vital as we respond to the challenges of climate change and population growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1835\">Construction is expected to start in 2029 subject to planning approval. The tunnels will enable recycled water to be released upstream to compensate for drought-time abstraction, protecting wildlife and river health while bolstering supplies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"2026\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Interested firms can register to access tender documents (<a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/pages\/responsepage.aspx?id=zb56VRQyu0-OUUFLaOu3ljMaVmeD31JAkhT_shZ_UxpUOVhYQk1RRU9FWEZHTzUyR0dDNFJMVksyNS4u&amp;route=shorturl\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1837\" data-end=\"2026\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">The nationally significant project will provide up to 75 million litres of water per day during drought, supported by water recycling from Mogden sewage treatment works.
