TORONTO\u00a0\u2014 The Ontario government has officially started construction on the East Harbour Transit Hub.<\/p>\n
Crews can be seen pouring concrete for a new bridge deck and laying track in what will become a new interchange station in Toronto\u2019s east end.<\/p>\n
In March, the Ontario government\u00a0awarded the contract for major construction<\/a>\u00a0for the East Harbour Transit Hub to a joint venture of AtkinsR\u00e9alis and Bird Construction, leading alongside Hatch Ltd.<\/p>\n Drill rig operators, steel and concrete workers, form workers and crane and excavator operators will be onsite to carry out the work, the province notes.<\/p>\n The execution phase of the project includes completion of the rail corridor and bridge widening over an important thoroughfare, which will continue to be undertaken in planned phases to keep GO Transit services running with minimal impact, explains a previous release from Bird. The work will also include the start of station works and associated infrastructure as well as a future road extension to facilitate a future streetcar connection.<\/p>\n It is estimated the investment in expanding the GO network will generate 8,300 jobs in the first 12 years of construction and delivery, the province notes.<\/p>\n The project itself is a joint initiative of the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto.<\/p>\n Once complete, the East Harbour Transit Hub will connect the Ontario Line subway with the Lakeshore East and Stouffville GO Transit lines, serving approximately 100,000 daily riders.<\/p>\n As part of the provincial government\u2019s Transit-Oriented Communities initiative, the East Harbour site is slated to have housing units in the neighbourhood, as well as day care, parkland, retail and recreation.<\/p>\n The East Harbour Transit Hub is located immediately east of the Don Valley Parkway and south of Eastern Avenue.
