{"id":31259,"date":"2025-07-09T07:43:27","date_gmt":"2025-07-09T14:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/updated-design-for-ontario-place-west-island-unveiled-by-therme-canada\/"},"modified":"2025-07-09T07:43:27","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T14:43:27","slug":"updated-design-for-ontario-place-west-island-unveiled-by-therme-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/updated-design-for-ontario-place-west-island-unveiled-by-therme-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Updated design for Ontario Place West Island unveiled by Therme Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>TORONTO \u2013 New renderings unveiled by Therme Canada of a new waterpark and wellness facility at Ontario Place\u2019s West Island show an elaborate, sprawling site with twisting and turning waterslides and other areas inspired by global spa traditions.<\/p>\n<p>The designs were developed by architecture firm Diamond Schmitt alongside Therme ARC, in collaboration with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, STUDIO tla and Trophic Design, states a release.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Therme has<a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/canada.constructconnect.com\/dcn\/news\/infrastructure\/2023\/04\/therme-addresses-ontario-place-concerns-and-design\" target=\"_blank\"> released several design iterations<\/a> for the West Island project.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_488803\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-488803\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-488803\" src=\"https:\/\/cc-production-uploads-bucket.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Therme_Canada_Updated_Designweb.png\" alt=\"Therme Canada's waterpark and wellness centre is where visitors can ride waterslides, but also thermal bathing, social saunas, pools and relaxation areas inspired by global spa traditions, the company states.\" width=\"600\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cc-production-uploads-bucket.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Therme_Canada_Updated_Designweb.png 600w, https:\/\/cc-production-uploads-bucket.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Therme_Canada_Updated_Designweb-300x188.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-488803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">THERME CANADA \u2014 Therme Canada\u2019s waterpark and wellness centre is where visitors can ride waterslides, but also thermal bathing, social saunas, pools and relaxation areas inspired by global spa traditions, the company states.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Opposition groups have been vocal about its look, stating Ontario Place should stay in the public realm and a \u201cspa\u201d doesn\u2019t fit the bill.<\/p>\n<p>According to a fact sheet from Therme, the building footprint is now 32,600 m2, a reduction of 14 per cent; the building height of two structures is now 43.5 metres and 22 metres, a reduction of six per cent and 22 per cent respectively; and there will be four Indigenous place keeping sites.<\/p>\n<p>The development has also been <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/canada.constructconnect.com\/dcn\/news\/government\/2024\/12\/auditor-general-slams-ontario-place-redevelopment-process-as-unfair-subjective\" target=\"_blank\">criticized by Ontario\u2019s auditor general,<\/a> who stated in December 2024 the company got special access to provincial executives during a submission process that was not fair or transparent.<\/p>\n<p>Late last month, Premier Doug Ford <a rel=\"noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/canada.constructconnect.com\/dcn\/news\/government\/2025\/06\/final-ontario-place-designs-unveiled-no-decision-on-temporary-science-centre-location\" target=\"_blank\">unveiled final designs<\/a> for the revamped Ontario Place, which were led by LANDInc.<\/p>\n<p>It will include a five-storey parking garage that will cost taxpayers $400 million.
