Canada\u2019s construction sector posted strong labour growth in June, reports Statistics Canada in its latest Labour Force Survey. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the sector\u2019s employment ranks grew to 1,640,800, a gain of 7,600 workers since May, and 55,600 more workers than the industry employed in June of 2024, a rise of 3.5 per cent over that 12-month span.<\/p>\n
Across all sectors, Canada\u2019s employment numbers increased by 83,000 in June, a 0.4 per cent rise. This was the first increase since January, although employment growth was concentrated in part-time work, which grew by 70,000 positions, a rise of 1.8 per cent.<\/p>\n
The employment rate, or the proportion of the population aged 15 years and older who are employed, increased by 0.1 percentage points to 60.9 per cent in June. The employment rate had previously recorded a cumulative decline of 0.3 percentage points in March and April and had held steady in May.<\/p>\n
In June, the unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage points to 6.9 per cent, the first decrease since January. Prior to this decline, the unemployment rate had increased for three consecutive months ending in May 2025 hitting 7.0 per cent, its highest level since September 2016 apart from the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. The unemployment rate within the construction sector bumped up slightly, rising from 6.6 per cent in May to 6.7 in June.<\/p>\n
