{"id":31428,"date":"2025-07-20T08:03:53","date_gmt":"2025-07-20T15:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/mighty-ontario-line-tbm-machines-need-a-name-time-to-choose\/"},"modified":"2025-07-20T08:03:53","modified_gmt":"2025-07-20T15:03:53","slug":"mighty-ontario-line-tbm-machines-need-a-name-time-to-choose","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/mighty-ontario-line-tbm-machines-need-a-name-time-to-choose\/","title":{"rendered":"Mighty Ontario Line TBM machines need a name: Time to choose"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>TORONTO \u2014 As they prepare to dig and trudge through hard soil to help make way for the future Ontario Line southern subway tunnels, the massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs) need a little personality.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Metrolinx invited the community to submit potential names for the twin TBMs.<\/p>\n<p>The following names have been shortlisted for their high scores across four different categories \u2013 tunnelling\/topic relevance, historical and\/or geographic relevance, creativity and ease of reference.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Titan and Terra:<\/strong> The word \u201cTitan\u201d represents strength and power, while \u201cTerra\u201d means earth in Latin.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Queenie and Corky<\/strong>: \u201cCorky\u201d \u2013 a play-on words for Corktown Station, located in the Corktown neighbourhood for which the TBM will travel through. \u201cQueenie\u201d \u2013 a play-on words of Queen Street, for which the TBM will primarily tunnel under. Also, a throwback to renowned Canadian author Alice Munro\u2019s short story \u201cQueenie\u201d on a story about spending a summer in Toronto.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Libby and Corkie<\/strong>: \u201cLibby\u201d for Liberty Village where the downtown tunnelled portion of the line will start and \u201cCorkie\u201d for Corktown where the downtown tunneled portion will end.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lucie and Thornton<\/strong>: Lucie and Thornton Blackburn escaped to Canada through the Underground Railroad in 1833 to settle in the Corktown neighbourhood, where\u00a0they would later emerge as prominent figures in the history of Toronto. The Blackburns also established the city\u2019s\u00a0first taxi cab service, painted in iconic red and yellow colours later\u00a0adopted by the TTC.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chipper and Chewie<\/strong>: One happily chips away at the bedrock and the other chews through the earth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can cast your vote for the favourite pair of names <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metrolinx.com\/en\/projects-and-programs\/ontario-line\/name-our-tbms\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. Polls are open until Monday, July 28.
