{"id":31612,"date":"2025-07-31T20:47:54","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T03:47:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/retentions-could-be-banned-in-late-payment-crackdown\/"},"modified":"2025-07-31T20:47:54","modified_gmt":"2025-08-01T03:47:54","slug":"retentions-could-be-banned-in-late-payment-crackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/retentions-could-be-banned-in-late-payment-crackdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Retentions could be banned in late payment crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-500195\">\n\t<!-- .entry-header --><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>Included in a suite of proposed legislation to improve conditions for small and medium-sized businesses were \u201coptions to reform or ban cash retentions in construction contracts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The move was hailed by industry campaigners.<\/p>\n<p>Rob Driscoll, ECA Director of Legal &amp; Business, said: \u201cGovernment\u2019s engagement on how to reform <span class=\"il\">retentions<\/span> marks a seminal once-in-a-generation moment for the industry to come together and shape reform in an area which has stifled growth, innovation and training, crippling supply-chain cash-flow and amplifying the repercussions of insolvency for over a century.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s hope industry can come together, give clients the comfort they need and suppliers the protection they need, in order to make our industry more resilient to deliver the UK\u2019s built environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Civil Engineering Contractors Association spokesperson David Allen said: \u201cCECA will also continue to campaign for the abolition of cash retentions in the construction sector, which lock up funds that could be put to better use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an industry, if we get this right, we will unlock cashflow across our sector.
