{"id":32235,"date":"2025-09-09T22:11:51","date_gmt":"2025-09-10T05:11:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/costain-wins-consent-for-130m-m60-simister-island-upgrade\/"},"modified":"2025-09-09T22:11:51","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T05:11:51","slug":"costain-wins-consent-for-130m-m60-simister-island-upgrade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/essential.construction\/news\/costain-wins-consent-for-130m-m60-simister-island-upgrade\/","title":{"rendered":"Costain wins consent for \u00a3130m M60 Simister Island upgrade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"post-501272\">\n\t<!-- .entry-header --><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p>The Department for Transport signed off the long-awaited scheme after a six-month Planning Inspectorate examination, clearing the way for the congestion-busting project.<\/p>\n<p>Costain is not expected to start work until late Summer 2026 and will use compounds already built for its previously shelved M62 project.<\/p>\n<p>As delivery integration partner, Costain and design partner Jacobs will overhaul the busy junction involving complex traffic management to keep tens of thousands of vehicles moving while construction takes place.<\/p>\n<div class=\"break-out-box\">\n<h3>Major works plan<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-16.12.01.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-501276\" src=\"https:\/\/www.constructionenquirer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-2025-09-09-at-16.12.01.png\" alt=\"-\" width=\"1166\" height=\"726\"><\/a><\/p>\n<hr>\n<ul data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"1668\">\n<li data-start=\"862\" data-end=\"1017\">\n<p data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"1017\"><strong data-start=\"864\" data-end=\"895\">New free-flow northern loop<\/strong> \u2013 a sweeping new link will take drivers directly from the M60 eastbound to M60 southbound without exiting the motorway.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1018\" data-end=\"1132\">\n<p data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1132\"><strong data-start=\"1020\" data-end=\"1039\">M66 realignment<\/strong> \u2013 the southbound approach will be shifted to create more capacity through the interchange.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1133\" data-end=\"1276\">\n<p data-start=\"1135\" data-end=\"1276\"><strong data-start=\"1135\" data-end=\"1162\">Two-lane connector road<\/strong> \u2013 a new two-lane free-flow link from M60 northbound to M60 westbound will replace the current single-lane road.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1277\" data-end=\"1384\">\n<p data-start=\"1279\" data-end=\"1384\"><strong data-start=\"1279\" data-end=\"1304\">Extra capacity on M66<\/strong> \u2013 widening to four lanes through junction 18 to tackle peak-hour bottlenecks.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1564\">\n<p data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1564\"><strong data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1415\">Hard shoulder conversion<\/strong> \u2013 between M60 junctions 17 and 18, the hard shoulder will be permanently converted into a live running lane, giving five lanes in both directions.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1565\" data-end=\"1668\">\n<p data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1668\"><strong data-start=\"1567\" data-end=\"1587\">Supporting works<\/strong> \u2013 upgrades to drainage, lighting, signage, and signalling to modern standards.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Temporary diversions and phased overnight closures will be required as bridges are widened and the new loop road is tied into the existing carriageway.<\/p>\n<p>The interchange was never designed for current traffic volumes and has become a notorious pinch point on the Greater Manchester motorway network.
