RYM<\/a>, the\u00a0Finnish\u00a0innovation center for built environment, commissioned my company to\u00a0identify changes in the customers\u2019 world and discover\u00a0business opportunities that arise from the changing business environment.<\/p>\n I asked\u00a0Janne Saarikko<\/a>, a marketing strategist and expert on future living, to\u00a0help with the research. We scoured relevant Internet sites\u00a0and social media outlets\u00a0and\u00a0interviewed experts to form a picture of the trends, signals and technologies\u00a0that would have an impact the industry. Furthermore, we used our joint expertise to make the final conclusions.<\/p>\n We devised a \u201cphenomena chart\u201d, a presentation\u00a0that summarizes our findings. It has two axes: impact and quality.\u00a0For each item, we evaluated if its potential impact on the business \u2013big or small\u2013 and its quality \u2013soft or hard. Soft in this case means human-derived, social, behavioral and value-based. Hard is technology-driven, data and information related. Below is one iteration of our chart.<\/p>\n We used the phenomena chart, backed with empirical data, to identify change themes. From the\u00a0phenomena and themes we were able to present eight solution ideas \u2013 the solution landscape \u2013 to build on.<\/p>\n How can companies use our findings? There are\u00a0four basic strategies for growth: improvement, innovation, extensions, and strategic acquisitions. For example, if a company is active in residential construction, they could pick up \u201cnew living solutions\u201d,\u00a0\u201ceverything as a service\u201d, and \u201cuser as a designer\u201d. They could then\u00a0ideate alternative ways to turn our findings into one of the four growth strategies.<\/p>\n Below is an exemplary\u00a0growth matrix that demonstrates the method using\u00a0five development themes.<\/p>\n Our study was intended to be more inspirational than scientific. We wanted to show that there are plenty of opportunities to create new value in the built environment.<\/p>\n We\u00a0encourage companies to do experiments, especially in cross-industry teams.
