October on UrbanToronto is State of Housing<\/em> month,<\/em> with a special editorial series running throughout the month examining the pressing housing challenges facing Toronto and the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Over the coming weeks, we will spotlight policy responses, innovative construction methods, and alternative housing models, while drawing attention to projects and reports that shape the way people access homes across the region.<\/p>\n The shortage of attainable housing has become one of the region\u2019s most urgent issues, with high rents and steep purchase prices affecting households across income levels. Supply has struggled to keep pace with population growth, creating uneven access and mounting pressure on renters and buyers alike. These strains underline the need for both immediate interventions and long-term strategies to ensure stable, affordable options in every community.<\/p>\n Governments at every level are advancing measures aimed at easing these pressures. The Province has introduced tools like the Building Faster Fund to accelerate new construction, while federal programs through CMHC are providing assistance to boost rental supply.\u00a0<\/p>\n New and revived housing models are gaining traction as part of the solution. Co-operative housing is seeing stronger interest, with proposals pointing to its potential for long-term affordability.
