Few things frustrate residential contractors more than having the quality of their work questioned after a project is complete. One of the more common and costly errors on residential jobsites is the incorrect use of torque. Whether it is over-torquing or under-torquing both can lead to project failures, wasted time and added expenses.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/strong>A major reason for this mistake is that many workers rely on \u201cfeel,\u201d rather than precise measurements. This guesswork leads to a wide variety of headaches for the contractor.<\/p>\n Over-torquing may result in crushed wood fibres on products being installed such as cabinet doors, stripped fasteners, or cracked cladding. While under-torquing can lead to loose connections and leaks that generate unnecessary and expensive callbacks, forcing the contractor to rework projects ranging from critical structural elements to customer-facing finishes, explains Jakob Malpass, product manager of Core tooling at Milwaukee Tool Canada.<\/p>\n \u201cThese experiences translate to all sections of the residential construction end-user base, from remodelers, structural carpenters, and MEP tradespeople,\u201d Malpass says. \u201cThese errors translate to increased labour and equipment costs. If they delay project timelines, contractors may face fines or legal action. Ultimately, it damages their reputation and bottom line\u201d.<\/p>\n Despite being preventable torque related issues persist. But if it is preventable, then why is the application of the correct amount of torque a serious problem? According to feedback from professional end-users the lack of consistent standards and unclear torque expectations from project to project are major contributors.<\/p>\n \u00a0\u201cWith labour costs often exceeding $50\/hour, even small mistakes can quickly escalate into thousands of dollars in lost productivity,\u201d Malpass says.<\/p>\n The incorrect use of torque can be found in a wide variety of projects on residential contractors\u2019 jobsites with some of the most torque-sensitive applications including board connections for deck safety; structural connectors like trusses and beams; and window and door anchoring.<\/p>\n \u201cThese are areas where incorrect fastening can compromise both safety and building performance,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n General torque charts based on trade-focused applications offer contractors a valued baseline (e.g., a 3\/8\u2033 Grade 5 bolt at 23 ft-lbs dry, ~15 ft-lbs lubricated), but the risk of error is high without the right equipment, Malpass notes.<\/p>\n This can be particularly true with less experienced workers who may be unfamiliar with torque-related issues. Fortunately, there are equipment solutions available in the marketplace designed to help contractors address this issue, such as Milwaukee\u2019s M12 digital torque wrenches and M18 impact wrenches with Drive Control. With experienced workers continuing to retire in droves, and fewer young people coming into the trades to replace them, helping workers avoid preventable mistakes and costly rework is more important than ever to ensure a contractor has the staff they need to tackle projects and maintain a healthy bottom line.
